I went to shoot at Kototaki Falls in Kyotamba, Kyoto, using Kase’s magnetic filter system. For this shoot, I used the Kase KW Revolution Plus Magnetic ND64 and the Kase KW Revolution Plus Magnetic CPL. When photographing waterfalls, one of the most important things is controlling the shutter speed. If you shoot at a fast shutter speed, you can freeze individual droplets and capture the power and texture of the water. However, if you want to create a smoother, more elegant representation of flowing water, a slower shutter speed is usually more effective. This is where an ND filter becomes extremely useful. An ND filter reduces the amount of light entering the lens without significantly changing the color of the scene. This allows you to use a slower shutter speed even in relatively bright conditions. The ND64 reduces the amount of light by six stops, giving me much more flexibility when trying to create a long-exposure effect during the daytime. At Kototaki Falls, the ND64 allowed me to extend the exposure time and render the falling water with a smooth, silky appearance. Instead of freezing every individual drop, the movement of the water was blended together into continuous white streams. This helped emphasize the flow and rhythm of the waterfall while giving the image a more calm and atmospheric feeling. I also combined the ND64 with the Kase KW Revolution Plus Magnetic CPL. A CPL, or circular polarizing filter, is particularly useful when photographing water, wet rocks, leaves, and other reflective surfaces. By rotating the filter, you can control the amount of reflected light and reduce unwanted glare. This can reveal details and colors that would otherwise be hidden behind reflections. In this case, I was able to reduce the reflections on the rocks behind the waterfall. As a result, the darker tones and textures of the rocks became less distracting, while the white water stood out more clearly against the background. This made it possible to emphasize the waterfall as the main subject without relying heavily on post-processing. Another major advantage of Kase’s system is the magnetic mounting mechanism. Instead of screwing a filter onto the lens every time, the magnetic filter can be attached and removed almost instantly. This is especially convenient when working outdoors, where changing filters quickly can make a significant difference. The key strengths of Kase’s magnetic filters are: ① Slimness and light weight ② Instant attachment and removal using magnets ③ A subtle premium appearance with the gold accent on the filter ring I also found the ability to stack the ND and CPL filters particularly useful. Even when using both filters together, there was almost no noticeable vignetting, allowing me to work comfortably without having to constantly worry about darkened corners. One thing to keep in mind is that slight vignetting may occur when stacking filters with an additional protective filter, especially when using a wide-angle lens. Removing the protective filter when appropriate can help avoid this issue. For landscape photographers who frequently shoot waterfalls, rivers, forests, or other scenes with moving water and reflective surfaces, this combination of an ND filter and CPL can be extremely versatile. The magnetic system also makes filter changes much faster and more intuitive, allowing me to focus more on composition and timing rather than spending time attaching and removing filters. For anyone looking to capture waterfalls and other landscape scenes more comfortably while maintaining a high level of image quality, I definitely recommend giving Kase’s magnetic filters a try. @DVrFbXA8Uz18169 #pr
