I am deeply saddened by the passing of Michelle Morales, a beloved public servant, educator, organizer, and fierce advocate for justice who dedicated her life to the people of Chicago. Michelle was rooted in Chicago’s Puerto Rican community, where she spent decades organizing for educational justice, public health access, and against displacement and gentrification. She believed deeply in the dignity and self-determination of her community and in the power of people to challenge injustice. From teaching in Humboldt Park and advocating for students in alternative schools to leading Mikva Challenge Illinois and Woods Fund Chicago, Michelle carried that commitment to young people, families, and communities throughout her career. I was grateful to have Michelle serve as co-chair of our transition committee and to later appoint her to the Chicago Board of Education. I valued her counsel, her conviction, and the perspective she brought from decades of experience. My prayers are with her loved ones. May she rest in power and in peace.
