Sometimes a paper takes 6 years, 75 days at sea, 900 metagenomes (700 in this paper), two new coding languages, and many fantastic collaborators. I am very proud of this one. ❤️ nature.com/articles/s41396-0…

Preprint of my recent work with @UCI_OCEANS and @aalarkin. We describe a novel clade of Prochlorococcus adapted to low P conditions along with general functional diversity and micro-diversity across the globe. I am excited to finally have this out! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
My little sister published her first first-author paper! She examined the James Webb Space Telescope’s ability to detect some of the earliest stars in our universe. She is an absolute rock star and I am so proud! @mikaela_larkin @UCSDPhySci #JWST doi.org/10.3847/1538-3881/ac…
Special thanks to my co-authors @GeorgeHagstrom @brock_ml Nathan S Garcia @UCI_OCEANS as well as @uciess @us_goship and @ISMEJournal
Awesome science communication by @jlw_ecoevo!!!

At the coast, we like to say there are no rivalries in marine sciences.
Here’s a throwback story about just one of the many amazing co-LAB-orations between @UNC & @DukeU’s marine labs.

Oh hey @brock_ml and @marinesciencejo that’s you two!! Such an awesome feature of all your efforts to understand the #OrangeCountyOilSpill
UCI scientists launched the SoCal Oil Spill Project to study ocean specimens to understand how the oil spill is affecting microorganisms that form the base of the food web & help regulate the marine environment's chemical balance. #UCIClimateChange 📰 bit.ly/ClimateOilSpill
Heartbreaking to see the #OilSpill environmental disaster. By initiating high resolution sampling we will use cutting edge ‘omics and geochemical techniques to understand West Coast ecosystem responses to the first major oil spill in #OrangeCounty in 30 yrs. @uciess @UCI_OCEANS
Making the most out of a tragic situation & putting my experience working on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to use. The Martiny lab is extending our 10 yr time series at Newport Beach to understand mircrobiome responses to the #OrangeCountyOilSpill @UCI_OCEANS @UCIEEB @UCIrvine
If you use in situ, experimental, or theoretical techniques to examine the activity of marine microbial populations we’d love to hear from you! Abstracts due TODAY at 11:59pm EDT. Hope to see you virtually or in person! #OSM22
Interested in what marine microbes are up to? Check out our #OSM22 session on marine microbial activity!! Abstracts due in 2 weeks. @jlw_ecoevo @JedFuhrman @aslo_org @UCI_OCEANS

Tomorrow I’m presenting some work from my PhD in the Martiny lab. This was a great enjoyable collaboration (@GeorgeHagstrom @aalarkin @LucasUstick @UCI_OCEANS Lomas and Levin) using genomics, modeling and stoichiometry to build a better picture of C:P ratios. Join me if you can!

Really loved getting to virtually visit @microbomics and the Jensen Lab @Scripps_Ocean this afternoon! I feel lucky to have gotten great questions and suggestions from an amazing group of marine microbiologists/ecologists/geochemists.
Super excited to host @aalarkin today for a guest seminar @Scripps_Ocean . Really great to hear about targeted metagenomic analyses to understand marine nutrient limitations and potential for eco-genomic biosensors!
I wrote a blog post for Springer Nature about the joys, challenges, and fantastic collaboration that is part of creating a global oceanography dataset. Check it out below! @UCI_OCEANS @uciess @us_goship @bodc
