I’m writing a book. It’s called Goonworld. It’s not about gooning. Or it is, metaphorically. But mostly it’s about post-COVID culture writ large—the range of, let’s say, unusual online forms/tendencies that have emerged this decade and that have in various ways altered the texture of contemporary reality. Sort of a travelogue. A journey to the heart of slop etc. Out via FSG eventually!

OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. We categorically reject censorship - whether direct or indirect - and urge the government to change course, amending the legislation which has led us to this point of repressive absurdity.

Imo, you can get mad at—and nonetheless pay greater attention to—US politicians doing theater for credibility alone, with no other real effect or purpose.
Or you can pay attention to thousands upon thousands of workers directly trying to shut down the war machine.
News: On Tuesday in Livorno, Italy, during a sit-down interview, Giovanni Cerraolo, a national coordinator for Italy's logistics trade syndicate Unione Sindacale di Base (USB), told me that the forthcoming "International Day of Action" on October 30 had almost 90 confirmed ports and mobilizing dockworkers, who will be striking and demonstrating everywhere from Liverpool, UK to Koper, Slovenia to ports in the U.S., Mexico, and India. “Piece by piece, we got here; it was a long road," he said.
On Wednesday, according to Ports in Action, a civil society organization supporting the union-led mobilization, that number of participating ports has risen to over 100 sites in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America.
No Harbor for Genocide, another autonomous organization supporting the action, has a website tracking the participating ports. "In nine days, on 30 October, dockworkers in more than 100 ports across Europe, Asia, Africa and America are taking action together, under the slogan: 'Dockworkers do not work for war.' The unions call it one of the biggest coordinated workers’ actions the docks have ever seen," they wrote, adding "We have documented 315 shipments of Elbit Systems components through 56 commercial ports and 3,400 shipments supplying U.S. military bases through 67 ports."
No Harbor for Genocide (NH4G) encourages those who live near a port to join the international day of action by tracking the growing militant union activity at NH4G's website and joining an action: tracker.noharbourforgenocide…

At some point I noticed that more and more people seemed to be telling me: everything you think you know about food is wrong. This led me down a rabbit hole that I’ve come to think of as “dark nutrition.” I wrote about this whole world for @NYTmag nytimes.com/2026/10/21/magaz…

I couldn't stop thinking about all the recent deaths so I've spent the last couple of hours writing. I am about 2/3rds done, should be out in the morning.
A certain small corner of the world won't want to miss this.
