This AU Commission's statement of 23 October calls for lifting sanctions “imposed against institutions and individuals” of Zimbabwe. That wording matters. By the AU’s own description, these measures target specific people and entities. A thread 🧵
AUC Chairperson's Call for the Unconditional Lifting of Unilateral Sanctions Imposed against Zimbabwe. The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, HE. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, once again renews the long-standing demand by the African Union for the immediate and unconditional lifting of unilateral sanctions imposed against institutions and individuals of the Republic of #Zimbabwe. The Chairperson @ymahmoudali remains extremely concerned by the negative impact of the unilateral sanctions on Zimbabwe's socio-economic development. The unilateral sanctions have significantly constrained Zimbabwe's access to international financial systems, deterred foreign direct investment, increased the cost of doing business, and severely limited the country's ability to secure development assistance. They have severely undermined progress towards achieving the country's Vision 2030, SADC's regional macro-economic convergence and integration targets, the AU's Agenda 2063, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Chairperson of the AU Commission reaffirms the continued commitment of the AU to support the brotherly nation of Zimbabwe in mobilising efforts for the lifting of the unilateral sanctions. In this regard, the AU fully aligns itself with the statement made by the Chairperson of SADC, on behalf of the region. Read @ au.int/en/pressreleases/2026… @SADC_News

Corruption, policy uncertainty, weak property rights and currency instability are what hold Zimbabwe's economy back. Let's point Anti-Sanctions Day energy at those. Zimbabweans deserve leaders who are held accountable at home not cry babies. Someone would say #WeNeedNewLeaders.

My position is consistent: I oppose unilateral sanctions. However we have to be honest, it’s not about “Sanctions on Zimbabwe” it’s shameful to spend AU and SADC credibility to shield a handful of powerful individuals this weakens that case altogether.

Arms embargoes are equally common, and the EU maintains several. Zimbabwe’s still allows equipment for civilian mining and infrastructure. After the killings of August 2018 and January 2019, restricting weapons that could be turned on citizens is a reasonable safeguard.
3
Global Magnitsky is a worldwide accountability tool. It covers officials and businesspeople (bad doers) from dozens of countries on every continent, for corruption and rights abuses. A listing applies to a person's conduct, whatever their passport.
7
We need to be honest: Here is what remains. The US has Global Magnitsky designations on 11 individuals and 3 companies. The EU has an arms embargo on supplies to the government. The UK delisted everyone in May 2025, and the EU dropped all travel bans and asset freezes in Feb 2026

We are still patiently waiting for an update…
THE National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has called on the public to be patient as investigations into high-profile corruption cases continue. The call for patience by the NPA comes amid concerns by the public that the authority and the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) are only targeting small fish while high-profile offenders go scot-free. zbcnews.co.zw/justice-matand…

PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA CONGRATULATES JUSTICE NAVI PILLAY AS LAUREATE OF THE 2026 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE On behalf of the nation, President @CyrilRamaphosa extends his warm congratulations to Justice Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on being awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has honoured Justice Pillay as “a person who, with exceptional courage and integrity, has led the way towards a more comprehensive legal order. This year’s laureate has been instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted.” Justice Pillay is an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice, where she distinguished herself in the genocide case of The Gambia v Myanmar. She was a pioneering defence attorney for anti-apartheid activists and leadership including Founding President Nelson Mandela. Justice Pillay served as a judge and President of the Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda from 1999 to 2003 and served as a judge of the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Court from 2003 to 2008. Following her International Criminal Court tenure, Justice Pillay served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. President Ramaphosa applauds the recognition afforded to Justice Pillay by the Norwegian Nobel Committee as a profound tribute to the veteran jurist’s courage, integrity and lifelong commitment to justice. President Ramaphosa said: “Justice Pillay’s crowning as winner of the Nobel Prize allows us to celebrate the progressive contributions she has made to strengthen peace, uphold human dignity and bring hope in South Africa and to peoples globally. “She has served humanity with principle and the belief that the world can and should be a better place.” “The honour bestowed on her reminds us to build a society where every person, whatever their circumstances, can develop their abilities and contribute fully to our nation and the world. “We are proud that Justice Pillay joins Chief Albert Luthuli, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, President Mandela and Former President FW de Klerk in highlighting the far-reaching impact of South Africans on peace, justice and the advancement of humanity. “We congratulate Justice Pillay and wish her well as she continues to participate in various platforms to secure the rights and dignity of all people.” ISSUED BY THE PRESIDENCY OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA
