Recovery from one disaster should not be interrupted by the next.
During the MAM 2026 rains, severe flooding displaced families in Garissa and Tana River counties into temporary camps. As the waters receded, households returned home to rebuild, while remaining exposed to the threat of drought.
Through an alert-based cash transfer project, PGI, in partnership with @acted_kenya and with funding from @eu_echo , has supported 1,900 flood-affected beneficiaries with three cycles of cash assistance via M-PESA:
▪ Garissa: 950 beneficiaries, KSh 10,370 per cycle
▪ Tana River: 950 beneficiaries, KSh 9,000 per cycle
▪ Over KSh 55 million in total
This assistance has enabled families to meet urgent needs, restore their dignity and make their own choices about their recovery.
For communities facing recurrent climate shocks, timely support can be the difference between surviving a crisis and beginning to rebuild.
Together, we are supporting communities to recover, adapt and build resilience.

Following community land sensitization engagements in Lokitonyala, Kalapata West Pokot, and Lokiriama, Lorengippi and Nakurio, Turkana, the process has progressed to the demarcation and survey of community land.
The activity brings together technical officials from the @Lands_Kenya, @NLC_Kenya and Survey Council of Kenya to support the process and ensure the technical requirements for community land registration are addressed.
Demarcation and survey are critical steps in identifying public utilities to support better planning and advance the registration process, strengthening the foundation for secure land rights and effective community land governance.
This activity is made possible through the partnership between @DLCI_Kenya, @acted_kenya and @FAOKenya, with support from the Delegation of the European Union to Kenya.

@DLCI_Kenya , through the SHE Grow Project, in partnership with
@acted_kenya , conducted a two-day women’s empowerment workshop in West Pokot, bringing together members of Kabulwos Women’s Group from West Pokot and Ekeunos Women’s Group from Turkana.
The training focused on strengthening women’s leadership and participation in community governance, with sessions covering communication and active listening, negotiation, conflict mediation and peacebuilding, political leadership, women’s rights, and building support networks.
Participants also developed practical action plans and mapped their support networks, creating space to reflect on how women can strengthen their voice, leadership, and participation in decisions affecting their communities.
The session is part of a broader initiative supporting nine women’s groups across Turkana and West Pokot, with the groups participating in similar two-day empowerment sessions designed to strengthen leadership, networks, and participation in community decision-making.

@DLCI_Kenya , in partnership with @acted_kenya and @FAOKenya , with support from the Delegation of The @EUinKenya , continued community land sensitization efforts in Lorengippi, engaging community members on the importance and process of securing their community land rights.
Secure community land rights provide a foundation for communities to manage their land and natural resources, protect livelihoods, and participate meaningfully in decisions affecting their land. Sensitization is an important step in ensuring communities understand the processes involved and are able to take an informed role in securing and governing their land.

Cash assistance is helping drought-affected families in northern #Kenya buy food and get children back to school.
For Kontoma, @acted_kenya's Cash Coordinator, these changes highlight the meaningful difference humanitarian action can make in people's lives.

This week, Community Land Management Committees (CLMCs) from Lokitonyala and Kalapata in West Pokot County, and Lokiriama, Lorengippi, and Nakurio in Turkana County are participating in a four-day induction program aimed at strengthening their capacity to effectively govern and manage community land under the Community Land Act.
Throughout the training, committee members are being equipped with practical knowledge on community land registration, the roles and responsibilities of CLMCs, land use planning, boundary delineation, community by-laws, and the mandates of key institutions involved in community land governance.
One of the most encouraging highlights of the training has been the remarkable enthusiasm displayed by the newly elected committee members. Their active participation, thoughtful discussions, and eagerness to learn demonstrate a strong commitment to serving their communities and safeguarding community land for future generations. It is this kind of local leadership that will drive effective implementation of the Community Land Act and strengthen accountable community governance.
The induction is being implemented through a partnership between @FAOKenya , @acted_kenya , and the @DLCI_Kenya with technical facilitation from @Lands_Kenya ,@NLC_Kenya , who are guiding participants through the legal, technical, and governance aspects of community land management.

Last week, representatives from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) joined @acted_kenya , Strategies for Northern Development (SND) and @ACFinKenya on a joint monitoring mission to drought-affected communities in Samburu County, Kenya.
Funded through the Eastern and Southern Africa Humanitarian Fund (ESAHF), the mission was more than a routine field visit. It was an opportunity to verify, listen, learn, and strengthen accountability to the communities at the centre of the humanitarian response.
From engagements with the County Commissioner, the Deputy Governor, and County Steering Group members to discussions with community leaders, beneficiaries, and non-beneficiaries, the mission sought to answer a fundamental question:
Are we reaching the right people, in the right way, and making a meaningful difference in their lives?
Across Samburu North and Samburu East, the delegation assessed the delivery of cash assistance, nutrition services, and WASH interventions designed to help vulnerable households withstand the impacts of prolonged drought and food insecurity.
But the most valuable insights did not come from project reports or monitoring tools.
They came from mothers describing how cash assistance helped put food on the table, community leaders sharing local priorities, and households openly discussing both the strengths of the response and areas where improvements are still needed.
A key area of focus during the mission was the effectiveness of Community Feedback Mechanisms (CFM). Through community dialogues, feedback channels, and direct engagement with project participants, the team assessed whether communities are aware of their rights, understand available assistance, and have safe and accessible avenues to raise concerns, provide feedback, or report complaints. These mechanisms are critical in ensuring that humanitarian action remains responsive, accountable, and driven by the voices of affected populations.
This is what principled humanitarian action looks like.
It is built on partnership between local organizations, international agencies, government institutions, donors, and communities themselves. It is guided by transparency, accountability, participation, and a shared commitment to ensuring that resources entrusted to humanitarian actors deliver meaningful impact where they are needed most.
As humanitarian needs continue to grow across the Horn of Africa, strong partnerships and collective accountability remain essential, not only for responding to crises, but for strengthening resilience, protecting dignity, and ensuring that no community is left behind.
Because effective humanitarian action is not measured by the assistance delivered alone, but by the trust we build, the voices we listen to, and the lives we help transform.

The gathering provided a powerful platform to celebrate the knowledge, resilience, cultures, and leadership of pastoralist women while fostering the exchange of experiences, innovations, challenges, and solutions shaping pastoralist communities worldwide.
Key outcomes from the gathering included:
✅ Adoption of a shared Declaration reflecting the priorities, aspirations, and policy recommendations of pastoralist women globally.
✅ Development of a collective Strategy at global, regional, national, and local levels to strengthen and amplify the voices of pastoralist women in policy and advocacy spaces, including UNCCD COP17 and other international forums.
