As the final in my @williamandmary undergrad course on marine bioinspiration, I asked students to create or modify bioinspired ideas and pitch them to the class. I was blown away by their creativity. Check out their products (coming soon to shark tank) - a🧵

Why do #fish swim in #schools? A🧵and new hypothesis. Schooling could help fish avoid predators, navigate, communicate, find mates and food, and save energy. Here we propose and test a new hypothesis: tinyurl.com/yc764d74

I don't think there is a human on planet earth who knows what this means for life on Earth in 2024 ...
...but I will tell you that on the 1-100 f&%kery scale, the Antarctic ice deficit today scores 117.

You’ve heard about Antarctic sea ice lows - well, here’s the consequences.
Over 9,000 emperor penguin chicks from colonies in the Bellingshausen Sea are thought to have died in November 2022.
The sea ice they lived on broke up early, before they'd developed waterproof feathers.

No changes - #Antarctic sea ice still continues its record decline
More figures at zacklabe.com/antarctic-sea-i…. All of the individual regional seas are observing unusually low ice.

ALT Line graph time series of 2023's daily Antarctic sea-ice area compared to each year from 1979 to 2022. Lines are colored from purple in 1979 to white in 2022. 2023 is shown in red. There are no statistically significant long-term trends visible in this graph for the month of January through February. Data are smoothed using a 5-day running mean from the Sea Ice Index v3.

The decline in Antarctic sea ice extent has been unusually rapid this year. At the end of December, Antarctic sea ice extent was the lowest in the satellite record. Sea ice extent was more than 500,000 sq km (193,000 sq mi) below the previous record. nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews
