They destroyed Iran, the region, and the global economy to get rid of a N-bomb that they weren't sure of themselves! Earlier it was Iraq's WMD program and now Iran's nuclear program. Same script, similar outcome. Ironically, rest of the world, especially the Gulf monarchies continue to allow this to happen to their own region.
Rewards for Justice is offering a reward of up to $20 million and possible relocation for information about Iran’s nuclear program, including its facilities, equipment, and associated personnel, such as those in the scientific community, or the movement of any of the above. One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up. So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us." Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026. There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true. But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone. Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were: 1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.) In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you. The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there. I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.

The huge result for Democrats might set the stage for a deal to end the Iran war, both in Washington and Tehran. The risk of major military escalation has diminished. Hegseth is totally discredited and will be forced to resign before the Democrats come in and impeach him. CENTCOM isn’t going to let him go scorched earth if he isn’t even going to be around in two months. Bessent sees the writing on the wall and will try to resuscitate his reputation by distancing himself from the war. The organizations feeding bad policy advice into Treasury, like FDD, have been exposed as being arsonists who don’t care about American voters or American interests. Rubio realizes he won’t be president any time soon and will devote all of his energy to Cuba, the issue he cares about most of all. Kushner and Witkoff are going to be subject to huge congressional scrutiny next year and will want to tie things up and step back from mediation. Vance is somewhat vindicated in his opposition to the war and will be able to take more control over the file. His only pathway to a viable run in 2028 is to fix the disaster Trump waltzed into. Trump will want to pretend the Iran war never happened and go back to building his ballroom. Even if he is angry and vengeful, as some had suggested he would be, there will be more resistance within the administration for further escalation. He is weak and erratic and easily manipulated—he was goaded into the war and now he’ll be chided out of it. For Iranian leaders, the election results give them their big and decisive victory. They can create a narrative that they won the war and destroyed Trump’s political project—the postmortems published in the next few days in U.S. papers and broadcast on TV will give them plenty of fodder. This narrative of a Trump defeat will actually make it easier to build consensus over a deal with the US, especially one that requires the types of concessions being pushed by mediators. Maybe, just maybe, the strong antiwar vote across the US gives us a generational opportunity to end the cycle of sanctions and violence that has driven the US and Iran to a senseless conflict. The American and Iranian people can be united in that hope.

Our Director of Strategic Affairs, Aiza Azam, presented her policy paper at a CARPO–FES MENA workshop in Berlin on strategic dynamics in the Arabian Peninsula and beyond.
In October I was in Berlin to present my policy paper at a two-day workshop organized by @CARPO and @fes_mena on 'Rivalry, Interdependence, Partnership: Dynamics and Trends in the Arabian Peninsula and Beyond'. I had proposed adopting a futures approach to understand Pakistan's potential regional role over the next few years, discussing scenarios for evolving dynamics against the context of domestic developments and considering the challenges posed by potential asymmetric dependence. Point 5, if true, doesn't make Pakistan a neutral mediator in the US-Iran peace efforts.
If the below agenda of the reported meeting between Pakistan and the Taliban is verified and accurate, this is substantive + very serious, esp. #5 . As before in history, this bilateral relationship remains mired in global and regional geopolitical great games, old and new.

Key points from preliminary draft framework for US-Iran negotiations obtained exclusively by Al Arabiya English: 🔴 Iran could transfer its highly enriched uranium stockpile to an agreed third country or reduce its enrichment level 🔴 The Strait of Hormuz could reopen to international maritime traffic within seven days of an initial understanding 🔴 China could potentially serve as a guarantor of the implementation and sustainability of any agreement 🔴 Direct US-Iran negotiations could be held in Doha instead of Istanbul 🔴 Iranian measures on the nuclear file and maritime security would be matched by clearly defined US measures to ease sanctions, blockades and economic restrictions 🔴 An independent verification mechanism would assess compliance before each subsequent phase of implementation 🔴 Neither side would be required to make substantial concessions without receiving corresponding, independently verifiable commitments 🔴 A dispute-resolution mechanism involving mediators and guarantor parties would address delays or violations to help prevent renewed military escalation

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY | FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, University Of Lahore I am pleased to announce that the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lahore is inviting applications for postdoctoral fellowships in areas including: - International Relations - Security Studies (and Strategic Studies) - Political Science - Decolonization Studies, particularly work connected to History, International Relations, Political Science, and the broader Social Sciences The fellowship is designed for scholars who already have a serious research agenda and want to develop it within an active academic environment that values rigorous research, intellectual independence, and meaningful engagement with contemporary debates. Under the University of Lahore's approved institutional policy, the fellowship is open to Pakistani and international scholars. Applicants must hold a PhD from an HEC-recognized or internationally accredited institution, demonstrate the capacity for independent research, and submit a research proposal endorsed by an appropriate host social scientist/supervisor at UOL. There is no age limit. What We Are Looking For? As Dean UOL Faculty of Social Sciences, I am particularly interested in scholars to join our inaugural cohort of postdoc fellows whose work asks difficult questions rather than simply reproducing established debates. That may include research on strategic stability, nuclear South Asia, emerging technologies and security, foreign policy, regional order, political theory, state and society, colonial and postcolonial knowledge systems, decolonization, intellectual history, or interdisciplinary questions that cut across conventional boundaries within the social sciences. For work on decolonization, I would especially welcome projects that move beyond using the term as a broad critique and instead engage seriously with questions of knowledge production, disciplinary histories, institutions, archives, political thought, and the ways in which colonial categories continue to shape how we study politics, history, security, and international relations. This fellowship is not simply about adding another credential to someone's CV. I want it to become a space for scholars who have a question they genuinely care about, an argument they want to develop, and the intellectual discipline to take that argument somewhere new. If your research sits within these fields, or productively between them, I would be very interested in hearing from you. Further information regarding the application process, and timelines will follow. Please direct all your queries to: [email protected]
