According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the officer briefly spoke with the teenagers before ordering the 17-year-old to remove his hands from his pockets. Police allege the older teenager handed a handgun to Tyrie Howse, 16, who ran from the officer carrying the weapon. The officer pursued Howse on foot and allegedly ordered him to drop the gun. Police claim Howse failed to comply, and the officer fired, fatally wounding him. Howse died at the scene. The GBI did not state that Howse pointed the weapon at anyone or threatened the officer. Classmates described Howse as a straight-A honor roll student who regularly wore medical scrubs and was enthusiastic about his future. Eyewitness Quan Smith said he saw officers questioning other people before approaching Tyrie and his 17-year-old friend. Smith described the death as a frightened teenager losing his life and said he believed the officer could have handled the encounter differently.
