Nav?
Replying to @ints_goze @realNepareizais

What happens inside a data center, and could it be a place to start your career? 👀
Last week, Delska Chief IT Officer Janis Gems and colleagues visited @rvt_lv to give students a closer look at our world.
Janis explained in simple terms what data centers do: keep the systems behind our everyday apps, websites and online services running. He also introduced our new EU North Riga LV DC1 10 MW data center and talked about Erasmus+ internships, practical experience and future career opportunities at Delska.
We care about the next generation of specialists. That means sharing what we know and showing young people the possibilities in an industry they might not have considered yet.
We hope to see some familiar faces at Delska someday! 🙌

Power availability is reshaping Europe’s data center landscape and putting the Baltics in focus.
Last week at DCN Warsaw 2026, Delska CEO @AGailitis joined the panel:
“The Baltic Breakthrough: How Northern Europe Can Transform the CEE Data Center Landscape”
Alongside:
Priit Lepasepp(@siiludus) — CEO, Sunly
Martin Salo — Co-Founder & CTO, Tensor Estate
Moderator: Jarek Niewierowicz — Country Manager, Renalfa DC
The discussion focused on grid constraints, AI-driven demand, and sustainable expansion. With one clear priority: delivering infrastructure when customers need it.
Why are the Baltics emerging as a data center hub?
• Power: access to grid capacity and renewable electricity
• Land: competitive prices and room to scale
• Climate: cooler temperatures supporting efficient cooling
• Connectivity: low-latency, redundant connectivity to European markets
• Deployment: new capacity coming online to meet customer timelines and support future growth

Behind every neocloud headline are teams doing the complex, essential work of converting AI ambition into reliable computing capacity.
From a data centre operator’s perspective, neoclouds are critical partners in building a stronger AI infrastructure ecosystem. Financing pressures warrant close attention, but so does the value these companies bring through greater choice, competition and specialist expertise.
Our investment horizons may differ, but our success is interdependent. Neoclouds require dependable power, cooling and delivery. Data centre operators require sustainable, credible commitments. Both benefit from realistic timelines, adaptable infrastructure and transparent conversations about the economics of scaling AI.
This is the time to work more closely together, understand the pressures on both sides and build partnerships capable of performing through changing market conditions.
Resilience is built collectively — from the power connection to the business behind the GPUs.

The clouds feel distant. Until you ask who controls it.
“Data centers are part of our world, just like shops, hotels and hospitals. Every country has to have them.”
— Andris Gailitis, Delska CEO
We rarely think about the infrastructure behind our apps, business systems, and AI tools. Yet who owns it, and which laws apply matters to everyone using it.
Ahead of our participation in @Techritory event next week, @AGailitis brings that conversation down to earth in a new interview: why a server’s location doesn’t tell the whole story, and what having a European cloud alternative means for customers’ freedom to choose.
It’s a complex topic, explained through familiar comparisons and practical examples. And it leaves a question worth asking: how much do we really know about the cloud we depend on?

Latvia’s National Cybersecurity Centre has announced new requirements for hosting information systems and securing data centres, which entered into force on 1 October 2026. The regulations establish common requirements for system hosting, data centre security and compliance assessment.
cyber.gov.lv/lv/zinas/speka-…
I see this somewhat differently: to me, it looks like another victory for bureaucracy - another step towards unnecessary rules, mountains of paperwork and an approach of “we will do everything ourselves”, relying on the resources of a single state-owned company.
It creates the impression that laws and regulations are being used to justify keeping everything in-house, using external providers as little as possible - or not at all. This also risks leaving the public sector paying whatever is charged, without sufficient cost scrutiny or competitive pressure.
The requirements appear so demanding that I question whether the state-owned provider itself will be able to meet them in full.
Paragraph 9 deserves particular attention. In exceptional circumstances, it allows Class A information systems to be hosted in a data centre without the confirmation of compliance required under Paragraph 21, provided that the necessity is documented, risks are assessed, mitigation measures are established and prior approval is obtained from the competent supervisory authority. This exception does not apply to Class A systems of owners or lawful holders of critical ICT infrastructure.
In my view, this leaves a “back door” that could, in practice, become a privilege for a select few: the full compliance burden and investment for some; a justification, an approval and an exemption for others.
The question is not simply who is formally eligible for an exception, but how it will be applied in practice. What guarantees that approval to use a privately owned data centre under this exception will be just as accessible as approval to use a state-owned one?
It also creates the impression that the authors themselves may anticipate difficulties for the state-owned provider in meeting these requirements, and have therefore left an escape route - so that public information systems do not end up with nowhere to go. That raises concerns about whether the responsible authority fully appreciates the industry’s operational realities and what practical compliance actually requires.
There is another important risk. If the state insists on doing everything itself, while limited budgets prevent it from attracting and retaining qualified specialists, the outcome could be the exact opposite of what was intended. Rather than strengthening security, this regulatory approach could expose public information systems to even greater risk.
Requirements on paper cannot replace a professional team, practical experience or adequate resources.
Under these circumstances, private operators have to ask whether it makes sense to invest substantial resources in meeting bureaucratic requirements, only to compete in price-driven public tenders while feeling they have little meaningful protection or leverage.
And, of course, experts will immediately rush to explain that this criticism is wrong, that these measures are necessary and that everything is being done in the name of security. But almost anything can be made to sound reasonable when presented under the right label.
In my view, this is fundamentally the wrong approach. Unfortunately, I am concerned that our closest neighbours may be heading in the same direction.

cyber.gov.lv/lv/zinas/speka-…
