Awesome to see my first op-ed for The Washington Post land on the front page in today’s Sunday Opinion.
The debate on AI is too often framed as a false choice between utopia and apocalypse. Either machines will save us or they’ll destroy us. My piece argues for something different: realism. AI isn’t a sci-fi god or demon. It’s a general-purpose technology that will disrupt, augment, and, like electricity or the internet before it. AI will reshape how we live and work. It won't eliminate life, but create a more thriving one.
Fear isn’t a strategy, and neither is magical thinking. What we need is clear-eyed optimism: policy grounded in history, humility about what intelligence really is, and confidence that human ingenuity can never be replaced.
It’s important to remember that the “AI pop” narrative has been a popular short term narrative at least six times in the past four years. However, clouds, AI labs, and semiconductors are generating the highest revenue and fastest growth we’ve ever seen.
This is not a bubble, by definition. Bubbles cross an institutional and retail FOMO line, where irrational exuberance becomes evident in hindsight. Bubbles are zealous optimism. If a stock price can be brought down by tweets and a few articles, it’s not a bubble. There is much more rational and conservative behavior than the media and market assumes. For instance, if you understand the credit requirements for GPU facilities, you’d know it’s not a bubble.
Alan Greenspan famously said that it was futile to attempt to predict a bubble. By dedicating all your time to searching for the peak, you miss the upward trend and obvious accessible gains. Timing the market inevitably leads to failure. A rule to live by: Bears are never fun during a party, suppositionally, and wrong 99% of the time.
Meanwhile, AI adoption continues unabated and innovation shrugs off the whims of the market.

Replying to @aginnt
@aginnt joined the Financing Neoclouds roundtable at infra/STRUCTURE in Las Vegas yesterday. Neoclouds need capital for silicon, hardware and data center capacity, often before demand has fully landed. The conversation kept coming back to visibility: lenders move faster when they can see what the hardware costs, what it earns and how it performs.

So much of AI doomerism is just a bad sci-fi series trying to make it, yet it ended up on the Sci-Fi Network for a reason.

🚨 OMG. How can't you love this president 😭😭
TRUMP: Sundar [Pichai], you wanna say something?
PICHAI: First of all, thanks—
TRUMP: This guy is a monster, and nobody knows him. What a great life! To be a MONSTER and not have to go through this. All you have to know is — SUNDARR! Sundar is his name.
PICHAI: Hopefully a better tagline than I'm a monster!
Comedic gold, man.
All of them are cracking up outside the White House 🤣
Trump is the great unifier!
God is good… which means you aren’t in control.

I agree.
Being a bear essentially means you’re wrong 99% of the time and right 1%. But, you never know when that 1% will occur.

Some private model jabronies feel threatened by acceleration of open source. What is their response?
“Everything is now dangerous. Stop them but I will keep going. Regulate me into a business model.”
