PHP developers have long worked within a synchronous, blocking model, largely because native PHP lacks first-class async I/O support.
But PHP can offer much more if we are willing to rethink that traditional model and embrace new ways of building modern applications.
Just watched a talk from @nicolasgrekas, Symfony's core maintainer, about his new FrankenPHP work. I was excited to check it out, then I heard this:
"This is not about re-inventing the way we do PHP. Swoole is not PHP. Swoole is something else. With a language that looks like PHP. Nobody is talking about moving an existing PHP application to Swoole because it doesn't fit the model."
As a Swoole team member and co-author of a coroutine framework, I find this disappointing. The implication that Swoole isn't "real PHP" is just unnecessary divisiveness. Options are great. Innovation is great. Personally, I prefer using an async coroutine runtime. You prefer something different. And that's fine. There's no need to disparage other parts of the ecosystem.

The Swoole team has open sourced TypePHP, a compiler that turns PHP source code into native machine code. I saw Albert Chen post about it on X, noting it landed earlier than the October release the project had planned.
TypePHP is an Ahead-Of-Time (AOT) compiler that translates PHP source code into C++ and then into native machine code. Unlike a bytecode cache or a VM, it does not interpret opcodes at runtime: it generates optimized native binaries that run directly on the CPU.
It keeps familiar PHP syntax and adds compile-time type information, so the compiler can emit fast, statically-typed C++ for hot paths. Dynamic PHP values, internal functions, reflection, and object metadata continue to interoperate with the Zend runtime through PHPX; user functions are not executed as Zend opcodes after they have been compiled.
TypePHP is written entirely in PHP and is fully self-hosting: the tpc compiler binary is built by compiling the compiler's own PHP source code with TypePHP. The bootstrap chain is pure PHP — no C or C++ glue in the compiler itself.

Thank you for joining us at the @phptokyo meetup last Friday! Also thanks to our sponsors @MOSHinc_jp (venue), @ClickHouseDB (beer), and @laravel (pizza)!
The next event will be a bit different. We're planning a year-end party sometime in December. Stay tuned for more details!

My fourth visit to this ramen shop this year already, and the sea urchin ramen is absolutely incredible! 🍜

2. Most web apps are I/O-bound, so compiling the whole framework offers limited gains. Without async I/O, concurrency won’t improve by an order of magnitude.
3. The practical use case is compiling CPU-heavy code into a PHP extension for existing web apps.
Surprise! TypePHP has gone open source earlier than planned 🎉
It was originally scheduled for October, but you can already find it on GitHub. Worth checking out if you’re interested!

PHP's async ecosystem is fragmented. Only a native core implementation like TrueAsync or Swoole can truly fix this divide.
Huge respect to the author for their relentless work on TrueAsync! I genuinely hope PHP embraces a native async solution in the future. 🐘⚡️
Quick update on Swoole AOT:
1. Swoole AOT is officially becoming TypePHP.
2. Going open-source in October 2026!
3. Native support for Decimals & Big Integers.
4. Seamlessly add custom extension methods to any primitive type.

First time attending an official Laravel conference, and Laravel Live Japan was absolutely the best one I’ve been to so far.
Let’s meet again somewhere next time!

Massive shoutout to @avosalmon and @offskip_dave for working so hard to make this dream a reality. Without you, this conference wouldn’t exist. You guys rock! 🔥
Here's the video clip for my talk at Laravel Live Japan.
