Machines still don’t speak biology. A new Cell Perspective argues that bigger datasets, larger models, and more GPUs won’t automatically produce a universal model of life. The missing piece: process-aligned, causal world models connecting molecules, cells, tissues, space, and time. Biology is not just sequence. It is history, dynamics, and emergence. cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092…

The genome is not just a list of genes. It is a vast control system deciding which genes turn on, in which cells, at what time and by how much. A Nature study introduces AlphaGenome, a model that can read one million DNA bases at once and predict 5,930 molecular signals, from gene expression and RNA splicing to chromatin accessibility, transcription-factor binding and 3D genome contacts. This matters because most human genetic variation lies outside protein-coding regions, where a single DNA change may not damage a protein at all, it may quietly rewrite the regulatory instructions controlling a distant gene. One cancer-associated insertion near TAL1 shows what this could mean in practice. AlphaGenome predicts that just three added DNA letters create a new regulatory motif, open the surrounding chromatin, increase enhancer activity and activate an oncogene 7.5 kb away. Instead of producing only a pathogenicity score, the model begins to reconstruct a possible chain from variant → regulatory disruption → altered gene expression. What excites me is the shift from cataloguing mutations to tracing how they may propagate through the regulatory genome. AlphaGenome does not prove disease mechanisms, and its predictions still depend on the cell types and experimental data represented during training. But it gives researchers something far more useful than another black-box score: a map of which molecular layer to test next. We have spent decades learning how to read genes. We are now beginning to read the instructions that decide how genes are used. Paper: nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

Google DeepMind is pivoting from attacking hard biological problems to joining the race for an "AI scientist." This will likely harvest a lot of low-hanging fruit, but I think it will stall our actual understanding of biology. If we think of biological knowledge and drug discovery as a distribution, we currently observe only a slice of it, along only a few dimensions. That is why drug discovery remains largely a matter of luck rather than optimisation over known parameters, and luck is not something LLMs with better reasoning can fix. What we need is new biological data, generated specifically to expose the missing dimensions and the unobserved mass of that distribution. Above all, we need causal data and models with strong inductive biases, AlphaFold2 being the obvious example. Almost everything since has been reaping the fruit AF2 planted. If this resonates with you and you have a strong AI background, come work with us.

One of the most encouraging things to see in this #Ebola outbreak response is how quickly #Uganda and partners have shared genomic sequence data publicly through @pathoplexus Rapid, transparent data sharing is critical for diagnostics, surveillance, research, and accelerating development of medical countermeasures especially for a rare #Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak where approved vaccines and therapeutics are lacking. This is exactly the kind of global scientific collaboration we need during emerging infectious disease threats. pathoplexus.org/ebola-bdbv/s…

Following the declaration of an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Uganda, and its designation as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by @WHO, the @MinofHealthUG has developed a comprehensive response plan to guide coordinated interventions. The plan is aimed at rapidly interrupting transmission of the Bundibugyo strain of EVD, reducing morbidity and mortality, and minimizing associated social and economic disruption. Specific objectives of the response plan are to: ✓Rapidly detect, isolate, and manage all suspected and confirmed cases ✓Strengthen risk communication and community engagement to promote public awareness and trust ✓Enhance data management systems to ensure the timely availability of information for public health action ✓Provide quality care and treatment for all cases while ensuring the safety of health workers and communities ✓Ensure the availability and efficient management of essential supplies and logistics ✓Maintain and strengthen the continuity of essential health services Implementation Arrangements: Under the leadership of the Ministry of Health, the response plan will be implemented through a coordinated, multi-sectoral approach structured around the following operational pillars: ✓Surveillance ✓Laboratory services ✓Case management (including Infection Prevention and Control, safe and dignified burials, and psychosocial support) ✓Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) ✓Risk communication, public health awareness, and community engagement ✓Logistics and supply chain management ✓Continuity of essential health services ✓Vaccination To ensure effective and timely implementation of this response plan, both local and international financial support is being mobilized to rapidly contain the outbreak and mitigate its public health and socio-economic impact. #Ebola #Outbreak #PHEIC

Africa CDC is coordinating a continental response to the Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ituri) and Uganda, both of which declared outbreaks on the same day—underscoring the urgent need for unified action across borders. In line with its mandate, Africa CDC is coordinating regional and continental efforts, bringing together all partners to ensure a harmonised response and strengthen health security across the continent. Yesterday, Africa CDC convened a high-level consultative meeting with over 130 participants, including governments, donor partners, @UN agencies, humanitarian organisations, philanthropies, and pharmaceutical companies, to align strategies and accelerate support for affected and at-risk countries. 🔗 Read the full statement from H.E. @Dr_JeanKaseya: ow.ly/GOSq50Z0Kil #EbolaResponse #HealthSecurity
