“This is the United Nations. This isn’t your communist dictatorship,” U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Michael Waltz said to Cuban Ambassador to the U.N. Ernesto Soberón during a shouting match at the United Nations on Tuesday, ahead of an annual vote on a resolution calling for an end to the U.S. embargo on the island. As Waltz outlined what he described as years of corruption under Cuba’s socialist government, members of the Cuban delegation heckled him and rose to their feet in protest. Soberón then stood up and approached the podium where Waltz was speaking, calling him “a liar.”
