Peter Malinauskas, premier of South Australia — a state of fewer than 2 million people — set out to take on Big Tech by restricting children under 16 from using social media. “If people are on your side, you can achieve anything, and I was pretty confident that parents were on our side on this one,” he says. cbsn.ws/47ElgUk

Premier @PMalinauskasMP will appear on US @60Minutes (tonight US time) regarding his role in the introduction of a social media ban for under 16s.
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas helped set in motion Australia’s social media ban for children under 16. He acknowledges the restrictions won’t stop every kid. “Kids are going to find ways around it,” Malinauskas says. “But they’re doing it less than what they otherwise would if you didn’t have a community standard in place.” Sunday on 60 Minutes, Holly Williams reports on how the ban is working and why other countries are following Australia’s lead.

It will be a bittersweet moment when the chequered flag falls at a wet Phillip Island on Sunday afternoon. But it will also signify a huge moment in business terms for the bosses of MotoGP, who are pinning their future hopes on Adelaide to drive the sport forward and provide a blueprint for growth around the world, writes Eric Johnston and John Stensholt: bit.ly/4BjWTJ0

Before there was the roar of MotoGP on Phillip Island, there was an uproar about bringing MotoGP to Phillip Island. This fascinating article reveals that back in 1989, protesters gathered to oppose the arrival of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. There were angry community meetings, predictions of chaos, warnings that the event would destroy the character of the island, and even suggestions that local schools should close to protect children. Sound familiar? But the race went ahead. The crowds arrived in their tens of thousands, the predicted chaos never eventuated, and the dire warnings of disaster proved spectacularly wrong. Instead, local businesses thrived, tourism boomed, and MotoGP transformed Phillip Island into an internationally recognised destination, attracting visitors from across Australia and around the world. Fast forward 37 years, and the transformation in community sentiment could not be more extraordinary. The very event that once sparked angry protests and predictions of doom has become so deeply embedded in Phillip Island’s identity, economy and community pride that its departure has triggered an outpouring of sadness, disappointment and disbelief. The very event that people once protested against is now the event they desperately want to keep. History reminds us that progress is rarely welcomed by everyone at the beginning. Sometimes the greatest success stories are the very projects that attract the loudest opposition (e.g. Adelaide Oval) South Australia now has an extraordinary opportunity to create something special with the world’s first MotoGP city street circuit, showcasing Adelaide to a massive international audience. Perhaps in the future, South Australians will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about. Well worth reading this fascinating piece of history. 👇 pisra.com.au/much-ado-about-…

The Tour Down Under has been crowned the best sporting event in Australia. It is the second time that South Australia’s famous race has earned the crown in just the past three years with plans to go bigger and better in January. @joshmoney__

This supermarket has been vacant for more than five years. And now, it’s a brand-new Children’s Creative Space. Every child deserves the chance to learn, play, explore and discover what they’re capable of, no matter where they grow.

I am appalled by the shocking attack on Dr Helen Haines MP in regional Victoria today. My thoughts are with Dr Haines, and I wish her a full and speedy recovery. My thoughts are also with her family, friends, staff and colleagues at this difficult time. While this is a deeply distressing incident, I want to acknowledge the courage and swift actions of members of the public and first responders who came to her aid.

The government has unveiled a plan to slash apprenticeship training in another bid to solve South Australia’s skilled worker shortage. For those who show the right stuff, their time learning on the tools will be cut by a year. @mikesmithson7

We need more homes. And that means getting more tradies on building sites sooner. In a nation-first program, we’re fast-tracking apprenticeships across seven key trades, supporting up to 1,000 new apprentices to get qualified sooner. The program has been designed to meet the demands for new housing as well as projects including the Torrens to Darlington, the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital and defence initiatives such as AUKUS. More pathways into good jobs. More skilled workers to build the homes and major infrastructure South Australia needs.

Liam thought he’d have to move to Europe to work in a Michelin-starred restaurant. Now he can do it right here in South Australia. Bookings have surged since last night’s announcement - just like at Esmay who was awarded a Michelin star. But this recognition belongs to people like Liam, working behind the scenes to make our restaurants world-class. Their talent and hard work are giving people another reason to visit South Australia, stay longer and spend more with local businesses. That’s why breaking new ground matters. It creates jobs, opens doors and gives talented South Australians more opportunities to build their future here at home.
