My not sufficiently informed theory is that it’s partly a product of him talking less about democracy and stuff like that which he did nonstop in 2022 and in the first round and pivoting to fear mongering about social spending cuts (evangelicals are largely poor).

What is it of the Brazilian left if Flavio Bolsonaro wins? Lula obviously can’t run again and as far as I’m aware PT has not built up any new sucessor material. Otoh, I suspect Flavio will become very unpopular very quickly as I think the Brazilian economy will get worse.

I think the Brazilian economy will get worse no matter who wins btw. Even if someone I like had run and miraculously won I think the economy there would still get worse in the coming years. The seeds are being meticulously planted for a long time and the global context won’t help
