A mayor, particularly this mayor, refusing to sign a bill is not breaking news. It's the equivalent of strenuously objecting, stomping a foot, throwing the Monopoly game in the air after losing. Is it an irresponsible show of lack of solidarity in this moment? Sure. News? No.
#BreakingNews - DC Mayor Muriel Bowser is declining to sign the ‘27 budget passed by the Council. She says use of one-time money for recurring costs sets up next mayor with a “$837 million fiscal cliff.” Not a veto…but could invite more Hill involvement in budget.
Mayor Bowser:
1) cuts critical safety net programs,
2) attacks Council for restoring cuts, &
3) frames it as "kicking the can down the road" when she would have opposed raising taxes as well.
The only way is her way: cut income, healthcare, housing etc. Let them eat cake.
🧵re fed gov paying $292M for 2000 National Guard members to rent apartments for a year. DC has 2000 National Guard members on our streets in military attire, many armed. Creating a police state d/n make DC safe or beautiful—the reverse is true. #FreeDC notus.org/defense/national-g…
Gov spending decisions are always about values, but rarely do you get an example as stark as this one. Spending $292M to house National Guard members that DC doesn't want here while continuing to harass & threaten DC residents WHO HAVE NOWHERE TO SLEEP AT NIGHT is morally abject.

"Congress is D.C.'s legislative body," says @SenRickScott. "This means we have a constitutional responsibility to fight for those living here just like any legislature should fight for people living in their state."
With news of McDuffie resigning, a reminder that appointments for pre-special election positions matter. 1) Critical decisions will be made and 2) Major advantage in special. For ex: Bonds was selected by Ds to replace Mendo, then won the special election. That was 13 years ago.
It's cool that the DC Council recognized that the pandemic-era effort to save restaurants-- streateries-- should continue post-pandemic.
Remember when we had an eviction moratorium during the pandemic and it saved lives? Do that next.

We are grateful to have played even a small part in fighting against the militarization of D.C. and for the right to control our own public safety response. Thank you to @ACLU_DC and @WashLaw4CR for your leadership and work on the amicus!

Events DC unlawfully hides millions in its slush fund while low-income DC residents lose healthcare and housing benefits due to budget cuts. Just... amazing.

We are proud to sign onto an amicus brief led by @WashLaw4CR & @ACLU_DC supporting the @DCAttorneyGen lawsuit to stop the federal deployment of National Guard in DC. DC's 200-year fight for Home Rule is inextricably linked to the fight for racial justice. washlaw.org/civil-rights-and…

Let's be real: needing to say that we oppose "involuntary lethal injection" for being homeless was not on our 2025 bingo card. But here we are.
📣 Take action to protect home rule AND homeless DC residents! #housingnothandcuffs
Friends outside of DC, we need your help. We have no vote in Congress, yet some people in Congress want to write our laws AND they want DC to lock people up for being homeless. Tell Congress NO. votervoice.net/NHLC/campaign…

More than 100 progressive groups, churches, and unions are calling on @MayorBowser to push back on Trump's federal surge in D.C.
"History is calling upon you to lead... not to cower in the face of an authoritarian who does not have our best interests in mind," they write.
I can't believe this has to be said but apparently it does.
NOTHING about this is normal or helpful or anything but an intentional flex of power to oppress DC residents.
Replying to @MayorBowser
@MayorBowser does not speak for us or for D.C. residents without homes.
We do not in any way, shape, or form "greatly appreciate" having D.C. streets taken over by untrained, aggressive law enforcement who do not respect the legal rights or basic humanity of D.C. residents.
