Introducing American Spend.
We're building the data layer of American commerce, a live and verifiable record of what America actually buys.
The largest economy in the world, made transparent and actionable.
Over the summer, we counted who paid for an account with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude.
OpenAI ended the summer with about four times as many paying accounts, but the average Anthropic customer spent about three times as much each month.
Are Americans paying more for groceries?
Our Spend Graph measured the average grocery ticket at the six largest grocers against the same weeks in 2025 (big box stores excluded). Every one of them went up, and most of them saw growth between 3-5%.
Last week on @EcommCowboy: the first power ranking. Ten brands, week over week growth, measured against Amazon, Target, and Walmart.
What reads as back-to-school spending showed up in the Spending Graph before it showed up on an earnings call.
This Friday, American Spend CEO @DerekBrown goes live on @EcommCowboy to discuss how America's been spending this week.
Who pays for AI? Take a look at the coffee line.
Starbucks customers are 3x more likely to pay for it. And they've mostly picked one provider — 81% pay OpenAI.

If someone wants to build Crumbs/Receipts for real, we at @americanspend can help.
DMs are open.
Crumbs was a really interesting concept that would have worked well and had high consumer potential. It could have found PMF outside crypto if they hadn't decided to get greedy.
Not sure how they planned to underwrite the actual cashback component either, but the concept was there.
Always remember: TREAM (tokens ruin everything around me).

American Spend tracked $329 million in AI subscriptions this summer.
The largest cohort is 35 to 44. Their top merchants are Amazon, Walmart, and McDonald's. Apple and Target round out the top five.

AI adoption has a map.
Claude runs 2.0 times over-indexed in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1.3 times in New York, with a matching deficit across the Sun Belt.
ChatGPT is flat across nearly every metro. Flatness, at this scale, is what mainstream looks like.
We observed 3.79 million accounts that paid for AI this summer.
Out of these, ChatGPT carries the volume: 2.9 million accounts, mass-market by a factor of 20 over everyone but Claude.
Claude carries the value. $161 per account, 2.7 times ChatGPT's, on a base a fraction of the size.
Being a founder in the programmable economy means expanding the boundaries of what can become a market.
For @derekbrown at @americanspend, that means bringing the $21 trillion U.S consumer economy onchain where anyone can trade on the biggest spending trends across food, tech, finance and more via @spendmarket on Arbitrum One.
This is just the beginning of what becomes tradable in the programmable economy.

The market leaned OnlyFans but the receipts said dating apps.
Should we try it again?

"What data has surprised you the most?"
@derekbrown, Founder and CEO at @americanspend, says "We saw Taco Bell sales decline in real-time."
"Average ticket size fell ~$2 over six weeks (from $17-$18 down to ~$15)."
"Exactly what you'd expect when you're subsidizing with $1 Mexican pizzas and $1 email deals."
"But transaction volume is up 2-3x. Existing customers keep coming back."
"It's working."

We love @stabledash's content and are honored to be featured in their coverage of modern markets.
Launching a "modern markets" series by end of year.
@Kalshi and @Polymarket have pioneered and entirely new lane for "futures" trading.
The pie here is absolutely massive and super fascinating.
This series will cover the rising stars behind companies like @StreetFDN + @BedrockFndn + @americanspend + @verona_dev + @pascaldottrade and how they're tackling this new opportunity.
Early stage. Looking for strategic sponsors to bring this to life. DMs open.

Is sponsoring @KaiCenat's Streamer University a signal to be bullish @Zaxbys?
@AtownBrown made their call - you will too. Soon.
Spend Markets are markets you can see. Or eat.
Friend from highschool runs socials for Zaxby’s. Saw on his IG story they sponsored @KaiCenat steamer university
Taking Zax as a dark horse on @americanspend based on my prediction that once the streamer university clips start going out that we see short term spike in Zaxby’s consumption and spend
