Giant Black Holes Don’t Explain Dark Matter 🕳️
Dark matter is the invisible “glue” that keeps galaxies from flying apart despite their dizzying spin. There’s more than five times as much of it as ordinary matter—the stuff that makes stars, planets, and us. What it actually is remains one of the biggest mysteries in physics, so scientists keep testing candidates, from exotic particles to black holes.
One bold idea suggested that dark matter might not be a haze of tiny particles at all, but a handful of monstrous black holes. These “stupendously large” objects would weigh more than 100 billion Suns. In the most extreme range—from a million billion to ten million billion solar masses—they would outweigh entire galaxies. The catch: even the heaviest reliably known black hole comes in at roughly 36 billion Suns, and nothing bigger has turned up despite extensive searches.
A team of theorists from the Gutenberg Institute for Theoretical Physics in Mainz and their colleagues took a different approach. If dark matter were packed into a few of these colossal black holes instead of being spread out like fine dust, the universe on the largest scales would look “grainy.” That graininess should leave a detectable imprint on the oldest light in the cosmos—the cosmic microwave background.
In the first 380,000 years after the Big Bang, light was trapped in a hot plasma. Once the universe cooled enough for atoms to form, the light was free to travel and still reaches us today as microwave radiation—a snapshot of the infant universe across the whole sky. Its temperature varies from point to point by only about one part in 100,000. That faint pattern is a precise record of how matter was distributed back then.
The researchers calculated how stupendously large black holes would have distorted this pattern. The expected graininess simply isn’t there. That means such objects cannot make up a significant fraction of dark matter. It doesn’t rule out their existence, but it does tightly limit how much of the invisible mass they can account for.
Other dark-matter candidates remain in play.
