There's this notion surrounding AI-assisted coding that the entire process should be infinitely fast. People gnash their teeth and wring their hands because review takes longer than the generation, and testing even more so. So, as a thought experiment, imagine that all those bottlenecks go away. The process is now frictionless, and you can spit out eight months' work every eight hours, all day, every day. Eight months' work involves many UI changes, feature modifications and additions, etc. Let's say that 10% of the program changes during those eight months. As a user, do you really want to sit down every day, only to discover that 10% of the things that worked yesterday don't work anymore, that you'll need to learn 10% of the program all over again from scratch? A program like that is literally unusable. You spend 100% of your time dealing with the changes and 0% getting work done. The fact that software is released gradually over time makes changes palatable. The speed of change has to be within our capacity to deal with the change. A firehose of AI output is simply impossible to deal with.

Someone says "With AI, I don't read code anymore" Obviously, that guy is either trying to sell something or making a point by explaining things from an extreme point of view But instead of trying to understand it, putting it into your own context, and analyzing whether it's actually useful for you, people take it as dogma (and write countless stupid X and linkedin posts) Of course, most code doesn't need to be read. You've been doing that for years with frameworks and libraries. Some code needs review, understanding, and probably tweaking Deciding what code needs to be reviewed is part of a process we call "engineering" and that's the job you have to do. AI tools are not a perk to work less, it's a way to focus on things that matter That being said, if you don't need to review any code, I'd start checking whether your company (or you) is adding value somewhere else

Programmer discovering engineering management:
I hate the feeling of no longer being fully in the loop. I tell agents to debug an issue. They explain what goes wrong. Propose a solution. That's sure a lot of jargon. Do I fully understand what they're saying? Kind of. But certainly not like if my mind was solely focused on that bug fix, instead of juggling 5 other threads. I tell them to do it. Make the fix, create a PR, the usual. Is their solution really the right approach? Will they not include a dumb invariant that might later bite me in the ass? Glancing at code, it *seems* fine. But I'm not sure. I'd have to go way deeper into the issue to be able to tell. But that would defeat the purpose of having agents do the thing instead of me. That'd be *inefficient*. So I merge it in, and move on to the next thread. Forever falling behind so I wouldn't fall behind.

If you're struggling with the idea of not reviewing every line of code and feeling like you can still deliver a good product, talk to an engineering manager that used to be an individual contributor. They've already been through what you're experiencing.

If a story is bigger than 1 point, instead of trying to guess how big it is, just keep decomposing it until you have a set of 1-point stories. All stories, when sufficiently narrowed, are 1-pointers. There. That's easy. I like the lunar logic estimation cards. A story is either 1, TFB (too f'ing big), or NFC (no f'ing clue) [estimation.lunarlogic.io/]. "This is the way."

We really need AI IDEs to standardize the location of instructions files within projects. Needing to duplicate the same file in multiple locations so VS Code Copilot, Cursor, and Windsurf can all get the info is annoying.
