Gods and Jötnar - Root and branch in the same tree.
I am the one who gave an eye as a pledge, so that I might see further than the dawn. I stand upon the bridge where light breaks against darkness, and I say this: the world does not endure because good has triumphed over evil. It endures because both forces must be present - bound to the same root, compelled to hold one another in check until the moment when fate itself unties the knot. I raised the fence around Midgard not to extinguish the wild, but to give it enough form for life to breathe between the battles. Without the pressure from without, the fence would collapse under its own weight. Without the hold from within, all would be nothing but a storm without a shore. I know this because I hung suspended, gazing down into the three wells. Urð, Verðandi, and Skuld do not weave according to what is just; they weave according to what must be. When they sever the thread, it is not a punishment. It is simply that the pattern demands a new thread.
I am the one who carries ice in my limbs and fire in my breath. I walk where the walls end, and I say this: you call us enemies, yet you fed upon what we were before you built your halls. The chaos was not empty. It was full - full of forces that bowed to no one, and for that very reason, they could be shaped. We press against your boundaries because it's our nature to press, just as it is your nature to hold. When Thor raises his hammer, it is not a victory over evil; it is simply that force must meet force - otherwise, everything sinks back into stagnation. We are not evil; we are that which cannot be endured for long unless it's borne. And you are not good; you are that which cannot stand unless something from the outside threatens to topple it. Look at the tree: its roots drink from what lies below, its branches reach toward what lies above, and the trunk holds firm only because both sides pull. Sever one side, and the other will crush what remains.
I have seen how you come to us when you need what we possess: the power of the mountains, the wind that asks no leave, the blood that flows when a sacrifice must be made. I have seen how we come to you when we need what you possess: the order that allows a thing to endure beyond a single storm, the name that ensures something is remembered even after it has been broken. We do not hate one another - any more than the stone hates the river that wears it down. We are necessary to each other, and this necessity is older than both hall and cave. When Ragnarök arrives, it will not be because evil has triumphed; it will be because every thread stretched too taut must snap, so that new ones may be spun. The ash shall burn. The ice shall melt. And from what remains, something shall rise - something that is neither entirely one thing nor the other. I know this because I have walked in the outer realms long enough to see that even the wild has its own laws - merely different laws than your own.
I know this because I have walked within the inner realms long enough to see that even the ordered has its cracks, and that these cracks are what allow it to breathe. We stand here, you and I, on opposite sides of the same chasm. Neither of us can cross it without becoming something else. And yet, it's precisely the fact that we cannot cross it that sustains the world. When the final day arrives, we shall meet in its midst - not as victor and vanquished, but as two forces finally fulfilling their true destiny: to obliterate each other’s form, so that what lies beneath both may rise once more. Until then, we hold our ground. I hold the wall; you hold the pressure. And between us, the Three weave what must come to pass, without asking any of us if it is right.
So it stands. Not because it's good or evil, but because it is necessary.
