Denmark is moving to ban Frankenchickens — the first country in the world to do so.
What we’ve done to chickens is the largest genetic experiment ever run on any animal, and one of the most troubling.
Geneticists took a scrawny bird and engineered an obese meat machine. The chickens we eat today grow four times faster than chickens did in 1957.
But their bodies are not four times stronger. By just six weeks old, many will suffer ailments of old age — heart failure, organ colapse — while one in four will become lame (Knowles et al., 2008).
In studies, lame birds will choose feed laced with painkillers — a sign of chronic pain (Danbury et al., 2000).
Their parents meanwhile are kept on starvation rations. Birds engineered to grow this fast would otherwise eat themselves to death before laying a single egg.
We now breed over 70 billion of these birds a year. Denmark is acting to reverse this giant genetic experiment. The rest of the world should follow suit.
The Danish government wants to ban a fast-growing breed known as “turbo chickens,” setting up another clash with the farm sector over animal welfare.

Many have wondered why the baby elephant recently rescued in Bagdogra, West Bengal, was rubbed with mud before being reunited with her mother. Forest teams may use mud mixed with elephant dung to help mask human scent picked up during handling and facilitate acceptance by the mother and herd. This practice is supported by the Field Manual for Managing Human-Elephant Conflict by Project Elephant, Wildlife Institute of India and WWF-India, while Tamil Nadu's 2023 SOP on Orphaned Elephant Calf Management also recommends using dung from the calf or herd and avoiding unfamiliar scents. Buddy was rescued from a goat meat farm. He was born blind so needed more support from the farmer, which led to the farmer developing empathy for Buddy. He couldn’t give him the care he needed and it wouldn’t be profitable to do so, which is when austinfarmsanctuary (IG) stepped in to give Buddy the support he needed. 🥰 Defying the odds, Buddy has been able to live out his life and let his personality shine. When a car plunged into a 10-foot-deep pond with a baby and his parents trapped inside, Surta Parmar didn’t wait for someone else to act.
The 38-year-old from Dungarpur, Rajasthan, rushed into the water as a crowd watched.
With her 15-year-old daughter Ayushi helping with ropes, Surta broke the car’s window and pulled out 11-month-old Drish first, followed by his parents, Dharmesh and Shilpa.
The family was rushed to the hospital and survived.
What makes her courage even more powerful? Surta says she was simply thinking about a baby who needed his parents.
Sometimes, being a hero is just refusing to stand by when someone needs help.
