OSR looking good. No CSFB damage and moving every day. Sprayed off the grass and companion oats. Looking forward to not looking at it until 2027. #RelievedFarmer #Farming #Harvest2027 #BringOnThePigeons

Most arguments I see in support of inheritance tax have two prongs: 1. Not many people pay it; and 2. You didn't earn the inheritance yourself. The first doesn't persuade me. A tax doesn't become fair simply because it falls on a minority. The second troubles me much more, because it suggests a particular view of the relationship between the individual, the family and the State that I'm not comfortable with. “You didn't earn it” assumes that the relevant unit is always the individual. Your parents earned their property, you didn't. Therefore there is nothing objectionable about the State intervening when property passes from one to the other. I can't accept that underlying premise The family is much more than a collection of economically independent individuals who happen to be related. People work, save, build businesses, improve farms and homes, and make huge sacrifices for their families. Generations care for one another and families undertake projects which extend well beyond an individual lifetime. The State should protect the sphere of family life, not seek to disrupt or dominate it. Intervention in a family requires a very high degree of justification. Where someone is being harmed, abused or exploited, of course the State should intervene. But the presumption should be that peaceful families can order their own affairs, care for one another and pass what they have built from one generation to the next. That is why “you didn't earn it” makes me so uncomfortable as a justification for inheritance tax. It treats the death of a family member as though property has somehow become ownerless and properly defaults to the State. If you want to say "it's unfair some people are born into families who have more wealth" then say it, and take the argument on its merits. The State needs tax to exist, and it has to gain it from somewhere. But the fundamental point underlying this is whether the State is justified in intervening in the peaceful affairs of the family? We don't belong to the State. Our families don't exist by its permission. And our property shouldn't pass to it when we die. The presumption should be that families are left alone. If anyone wants to override that principle, it needs to be justified.

Found a new use for the drone! Now I know what it feels like to be a rather slow, crossed-eyes and malcoordinated Peregrine falcon.. I’m hiring myself out to local farms at a reasonable rate. #ChasingBirds #Farming #Harvest2027

I may have finally gone mad.. My plan for “ZEN (not YEN) cropping” this year is based around planting something that will give a decent gross margin whilst also growing something that I know will take off and survive the winter and whatever the spring and summer throw at it, plus a decent companion for soil health and possible weed control.. But no such crop exists! I hear you say. So… why not grow two crops and pick the best? Oats on our ground are a dead-cert for being there at harvest. OSR would provide a better margin and be better for the soil and rotation, but is high risk. So I’ve grown both. At the same time. In the same fields. I’ve drilled the oats, then broadcast the OSR (plus buckwheat and linseed) and will roll it in after the next shower. If I get rid of the OSR, I’ll have at least put in a decent companion for the oats and soil to help compete and shade out blackgrass. If I keep the OSR, I’ll be able to spray out any blackgrass with the oats. There’s also a grazing option in the spring to remove the OSR and control the oats. It’s late for the OSR, but whose isn’t? And it’s early for the oats (16 days earlier than normal for us), but excessive growth I’m sure I can handle late winter/very early spring, or let the weather or sheep do it for me. Much of this is based on weather patterns the farm has encountered over the past four years and how it’s affected our crops. Whilst this winter and next spring’s weather may be different again, providing some kind of “weather proofing” to the cropping and the soil just seems common sense and takes a weight off the shoulders. You see it’s not about the YEN, it’s all about the ZEN 🙏🏻😌 #Farming #ZENfarming #Harvest2027 #ChaosFarming #Certifiable #MeditationAndAggregation #Ohhhmmmm

ZEN farming, not YEN farming..
