New @churchofengland website looks good, at a first glance. But, as I feared, 90% of my bookmarks are broken...

I know it's a bit of work to set up redirects for tons of pages, but the cost of not doing so is that many/most searches for CofE content will take you to "Page not found" until the internet has caught up, while links from static pages will be broken for ages.

According to @BpBlackburn, "In the diocese of Blackburn, central costs make up six per cent of the overall budget, compared with an average of ten to 12 per cent in the charity sector" (@ChurchTimes, repeated on @BBCR4Sunday c.6:30). Where does the latter figure come from? (1/6)

Rather than making dubious comparisons with the whole charitable sector, the key is to make sure that any central diocesan posts are really serving to advance the charitable objectives, i.e., helping to spread the gospel and grow the church, as @Psephizo makes clear. (5/6)

Excellent piece of journalism about last week's CofE "débâcle".
‘In a bid for curated bespoke optics that tell a sanitised story, the Church in Pakistan’s telling of gritty reality was discarded.’ Reaction in the Church of Pakistan on the fallout from the LP awards. I also spoke to Taheer Ashrafi yesterday. churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2…

The constitutional amendment which needs to be made here is that any PM not in communion with the Church of England ought to transfer their responsibility in the appointment of Bishops to the Lord Chancellor (or another senior minister who is in communion). If you want to disestablish the Church of England, please say so. But until then, this “antiquated and archaic anomaly” preserves the Protestant Settlement of the Established Church. Gordon Brown’s reforms greatly diminished the role of a PM in advising the King on the appointment of Bishops, but the Royal Prerogative exists still, and the power to choose Bishops could be restored to No10 (Reform and the Conservatives will do so). It is a mistake to think this is some minor ‘correction’ of an otiose anachronism. The official position of the Roman Catholic Church is that the Church of England is not even a church in the proper sense, but merely an ‘ecclesial community’. That isn’t unimportant. Will a Roman Catholic PM recommend that Anglo-Catholic or socially conservative Bishops be advanced, and fewer Low Church or liberal Bishops? The questions arising from this proposed change are neither ecclesiologically nor theologically insignificant. But I don't think @andyburnham quite appreciates the complexity of this.

Reading the @SaveTheParish General Synod Manifesto. They "will call for a disciplined staffing structure moving toward a charity sector average of 1 support staff member to every 8 member[s] of the frontline parochial clergy (1 to 8) by 2031" (1/4)

There are good and important things in there, for sure, but a lot strikes me as sloppy, shouty and unrealistic. You can open the money taps and create countless vacancies for parish clergy, but it will be many years before there are enough clergy to fill those vacancies (10/10)

Thinking again about the 1-to-8 ratio above (link in tweet 2), I wonder if it is based on £6.3bn generating funds vs £52.3bn on charitable activities (1-to-8.3)? If so, I'm not sure that maps onto frontline-vs-support.

I read @_F_B_G_'s article thecritic.co.uk/missionaries… and it seems to in response to the following, which strikes me as quite a reasonable call for accountability for clergy who love autonomy:
