Day 4 brought #ANZSVS2026 to a close with complex aortic and carotid decision-making.
The programme covered branched and fenestrated repair, arch and ascending aortic disease, complex service design, CREST 2, TCAR and carotid revascularisation. #VascularSurgery #ANZSVS2026
Good carotid decisions require neurology liaison and surgeons familiar with all available techniques, alongside careful attention to patient risk, anatomy, life expectancy and follow-up. #VascularSurgery #ANZSVS2026
The final session widened the discussion to oncovascular surgery, global vascular care and multidisciplinary aortic teams.
Four full days, with plenty of learnings to take home. #VascularSurgery #ANZSVS2026
Day 3 of #ANZSVS2026 started with the SALVAGE Fun Run and covered registry data, AVA 2.0, TEVAR, Augmented Vision angiography, aortic dissection, spinal cord ischaemia and difficult trainee cases.
Serious science. Practical discussion. Good people.

Day 3 of #ANZSVS2026 began at 7:00 am with the SALVAGE Fun Run beside the lake in Queenstown NZ.
A big red-shirted ANZSVS/SAL-VAGE group, combined with cold morning air made a good start before the scientific programme got underway.

Day 2 of #ANZSVS2026 moved from wound care, vascular nursing and venous disease to renal access, sustainability, open aortic training, simulation and trauma.
Different sessions, same question: how do we build better systems around patients and the teams caring for them?
Day 1 of #ANZSVS2026 is a wrap. PAD debates, Rutherford Lecture from Prof Wesley S Moore on carotid disease, global vascular care updates from Fiji & South Africa, a big afternoon on diabetic foot disease & limb salvage, and a haka welcome on the QT rooftop as the sun went down.
The sudden death of Senator Lindsey Graham from aortic dissection is a reminder that this condition kills more than 3 people per day in ANZ alone and is missed in over half of ED presentations. A CT scan saves lives. #ThinkAorta #AorticDissection thinkaorta.com.au
Preliminary findings from the Medical Examiner of the District of Columbia said Senator Lindsey Graham died from an “aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease."
Here's what to know: abcnews.link/djchOA2
BTW: in some patients there is a genetic trait which can be inherited, sometimes associated with a bicuspid aortic valve. We recommend first-degree relatives (parents, siblings, and children) of patients with an aortic dissection be screened with an echocardiogram. #ThinkAorta
We mourn the passing of Dr John Frawley (1939-2026), a pioneer of vascular and transplant surgery in Australia, recipient of the Order of Australia, and mentor to generations of surgeons. Rest in peace. #VascularSurgery #InMemoriam
ANZSVS HAS NOT ENDORSED ANY SUCH PRODUCTS.
Any claim to the contrary is false.
These profiles use stolen photographs of real clinicians and AI-generated images to fabricate medical authority.
#PatientSafety #VascularSurgery #ANZSVS
If you see a post claiming a varicose vein product is "ANZSVS endorsed" or "TGA approved" — treat it as misleading.
Varicose veins require proper clinical assessment. See your GP or a vascular specialist.

International Women’s Day 2026
Vascular surgery has long been one of the most male-dominated surgical specialties in Australasia. That’s changing.
In 2026, 6 women & 3 men were selected into vascular surgery training across Aus & NZ.
#IWD2026 #WomenInSurgery #VascularSurgery
As International Women’s Day approaches, we recognise women helping shape the future of vascular surgery across Australia & Aotearoa New Zealand.
Dr Roxanne Wu, A/Prof Sarah Aitken & Prof Shirley Jansen AM are among those leading our specialty.
#IWD2026 #WomenInSurgery #ANZSVS
Across training, research and leadership, women continue to strengthen vascular surgery across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Their contributions benefit our specialty and our patients.

A fantastic turnout for the @WoundsAus #BeatTheSwell event in Melbourne and around Australia tonight. Many thanks to speakers Dr Elizabeth Webb and Prof Fiona Wood, and all the organisers and sponsors. @ANZSVS are happy to support this. For more info visit woundsaustralia.org/int/woun…
A ruptured splenic artery aneurysm made headlines this week — rare, but rapidly life-threatening.
Most visceral artery aneurysms are found incidentally and can be safely monitored. Very few rupture.

The key message is prevention.
Early review by a specialist vascular surgeon allows careful risk assessment, surveillance planning and (where appropriate) planned treatment.
Early specialist input can turn an emergency into controlled care.
