So AI is not content with simply writing papers, but it is now also reviewing papers. What's next? Will AI agents become the only readers of papers? I suspect so, alas.
The importance of this paper cannot be overstated. The authors compared AI reviews with 134 reports written by carefully selected, paid human experts. The results are impressive. Not only AI received higher ratings across all seven dimensions assessed by an AI judge. But even three former journal editors preferred AI reviews in 90% of the cases. The potential benefits of AI reviews for scientific advance are getting enormous: faster and higher quality feedback, less reviewing work, more time for research. We could even imagine journals run entirely by AI editors and reviewers. This could radically disrupt a publishing system that costs researchers considerable time and money. Let me say: some disruption would be welcome. But there are also major concerns. What happens when a few AI systems become gatekeepers across sciences? They might increase average review while narrowing the range of ideas that survive. This is particularly critical at the scientific frontier, where an important contribution may challenge the assumptions that existing research takes for granted. And even worse: let’s not forget that, near the frontier, AI systems become more likely to hallucinate. So they might embed errors at the very core of human knowledge. A tsunami is coming. And we’re not ready. * Paper in the first reply

Interesting and timely new dataset available, tho if you are seeking to generalize from this, 1) the selection of cases may potentially err on the side of confirmation bias and 2) "extremism" is defined as anti-democratic not anti-regime. But...we may steal some questions for the next wave of the WVS. Open access: nature.com/articles/s41597-0…

My name is not the reason we're paying $5/gallon for gas. My name is not the reason you can't afford your groceries. My name is not the reason you can't afford your mortgage or rent. My name is not the reason you can't see a doctor. Their policies are the reason.

Opposition parties cannot defeat backsliding incumbents alone, but big united fronts often fail, too. The important choice lies between unity coalitions and quiet ones—and knowing which to choose can make all the difference. muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/article/1…

Helen checked in on me a couple of months ago when she saw I was on medical leave. She didn’t miss a thing. She was the same kind of journalist as she was a person: brilliant, thoughtful, critical, & incisive. I am so sad we'll no longer read her wit & wisdom. But I'm saddest of all that we won't get to meet up in Ottawa. Truly one of the greats 💔 statnews.com/2026/10/13/hele…

Let this sink in—The UN has adopted a new global pandemic preparedness declaration, approving it with a vote of 153–3… however, the only countries to vote “No” were US, Israel and Argentina. Even Russia, North Korea, China, Iran, and Yemen voted with the rest of the world.

This is the sort of study I might cite in a presentation making a case for Medicare-for-All. Separate programs for low-income people that reimburse providers at lower rates invariably translate into lower tier of access — a strong argument for a single-tier system.
If you want universal healthcare in the US, you better make a really good argument why it won’t turn into medicaid for all. Fascinating new study looked at secret shoppers trying to obtain an appointment for a broken ankle. Only 14% of medicaid patients were able to get an appointment. What do you expect when medicaid reimburses below cost?

Most of WHO’s money comes heavily earmarked, which fragments its support to countries. Leading an increase in assessed contributions has been a major achievement of the current Director-General. If we want the next Director-General to run WHO strategically and help fix the global health architecture, donors need to keep supporting that increase. danielthornton245140.substac…
