BREAKING: $INTC Intel Accelerates Open Infrastructure for the Agentic AI Era with 1.3 PFLOPS GPU and 46,000-Core Racks
At the Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Summit 2026 in San Jose, Intel detailed its open, heterogeneous approach to scaling agentic AI - autonomous systems that orchestrate, reason, use tools, and run multi-step workflows at enterprise scale.
Key announcements:
1. Intel GPU D-series (formerly Crescent Island, with D270 as the first product):
- Delivers up to 1.3 petaflops of FP8 compute inside a 350-watt power envelope. It targets high-capacity inference, long-context agentic workloads, and KV-cache efficiency.
- Intel’s reference PCIe card offers 160 GB LPDDR5X; partner designs can scale to 480 GB.
- Customer sampling is underway.
2. Xeon 6+ rack designs:
- Select configurations exceed 46,000 cores at 133.45 kW, built for orchestration, concurrency, and cost-efficient scaling of agentic pipelines.
Intel has now made 116 contributions to OCP since 2011 and continues pushing open software, standards-based interoperability, and heterogeneous systems that pair Xeon CPUs with purpose-built accelerators.
Intel executives framed the effort around "putting every prompt in its place", matching the right compute resource (CPU, GPU, or accelerator) to the right workload for better performance, power, and economics versus rigid GPU-only setups.
This supports open models and enterprise deployments that need flexibility rather than maximum raw peak FLOPS alone.
This positions Intel’s open, CPU-centric and accelerator strategy as a practical alternative for production agentic AI as inference volumes grow and power/cost constraints tighten.
