The kind of nerdy nonsense that we all need.
It's the 145th birth anniversary of PG Wodehouse.
In one of the many absurd bits of trivia that make up my professional and personal life, I realised that Sachin Tendulkar doesn't have a single innings of 145 in international cricket. He doesn't even have an innings where he's faced 145 balls.
He has one knock where he has batted for 145 minutes: That was 98 off 75 balls vs Pakistan in Centurion, World Cup 2003. One of his most iconic innings of all time.
If he had to have just one association with 145, that's not a bad one, eh?
To all those whose lives Wodehouse has affected, he's always called The Master.
I needed to find a cricketing connect between his 145th birthday and the other master who shaped part of my childhood. It gives me unreasonable joy to find one that ties so specifically - within this absurdity of finding a connect at all - to such an indelible cricketing memory.

Cricket fans, where can one watch decently edited highlights of the India-WI ODIs? Why can't the BCCI, with all its riches, produce highlights the way the ECB does?! Anyone at @cricinfo have any ideas?

It’s really fascinating that “Chandra’s limit,” the maximum mass of a stable white dwarf star that has swallowed Air India, will be tested not in JRD-Bhabha’s TIFR, but in the Supreme Court in New Delhi.
In the 1940s, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was committed to his teaching role at the University of Chicago, despite being based at the Yerkes Observatory. Each week, he traveled 80 miles to teach a special course attended by only two students.
The students were Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen-Ning Yang. They proved their mentor's faith was well-placed when they both won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957, years before Chandrasekhar received the same honor in 1983. Remarkably, this course went down in history as the only one where every attendee received a Nobel Prize, underscoring the extraordinary impact of Chandrasekhar's dedication and teaching.

This piece on the @usopen and this indefensible Kalshi deal is excellent/enraging. As usual in tennis, the players will bear the brunt. What are we doing here, people? What a stain… benrothenberg.com/p/us-open-…

It is unacceptable for a world-class city like ours to allow its major natural history museum to close. We cannot allow it. My statement ⬇️

The folks at @Equatormag are putting out so much essential reading that it's hard to keep up. This dispatch from a sweltering Mumbai is a postcard from all of our futures.
Summer in Mumbai was brutal and endless. The monsoon's poster child was running out of water. In a dispatch for @Equatormag, I wrote about what it's like to live with extreme heat in a broken city and limits to resilience. With🔥 images by @ishantankha. equator.org/articles/city-of…

@SandeepMertia's take on India's software tech parks situates the 90s as a vital bridge that could hold in place, briefly, a link between statist development & neoliberal capture. A temporal bridge.
And wow, @florencemadenga's take on political parody opens up a terrain of intertextuality that, in turn, suggests user journeys (that @parodevi brought up) involving 'textual' squatting & poaching (a la Henry Jenkins on early fan cultures)!
