I didn't expect increased unification of the Windows and Unix development experience to be a side effect of Rust's success, but it's a very nice one. The fact that tools like Nushell and ripgrep are cross-platform makes switching between Win/Mac/Linux much more seamless.

Trouble shooting software installation: It's always anti-virus.
Troubleshooting for network people: It's always DNS. Troubleshooting for developers: It's always multi-threading

"The worst thing an installer can do is fail to install software, but the second-worst thing an installer can do is to successfully install software that doesn't work." great post on @axodotdev's latest work on glibc compat from @mistydemeo
Wrote a new blog post for the axo blog: how we made our shell installers smarter. We now track the version of glibc Linux binaries were built against and do some smart version comparison to make sure we're always installing a binary that actually works. blog.axo.dev/2024/08/glibc

vibe check: in order for software to be considered open source, building it on my own for my own needs should be made "easy/accessible" by the original authors

Few months late to this but I like the additional lever @BuoyantIO / @Linkerd has pulled for open source monetization: stable releases. Otherwise, the default options have been 1) hosted cloud or 2) 'open core'. h/t @ag_dubs for sharing thenewstack.io/buoyant-revis…

Turns out `cargo dist` is s great way to distribute a project that exposes a C API library, but is written in Rust! Cross compliation to Linux, Mac, and Windows and full integration with @github releases. And automatically generated curl based installer! Nice work @axodotdev team! 👏👏👏

This is a great post and boy howdy do I have a fun slide for y'all at RustConf this year when we talk about rustup and it's shenanigans
i have once again fallen to my vices: trying to explain some small technical thing and having it spiral way out of control until i'm conflating release engineering with Doing A Gender and decide to announce another transition via my work's developer comms blog.axo.dev/2024/07/an-app-…

For any folks who may be curious about this—it’s possible (& quite easy) to set up cargo-dist to create extra artifacts. I had it create an artifact that is the git repo including all submodules using this script github.com/rob-p/git-archive… using it’s “extra-artifacts” capability.
Hi #rustlang #cargodist (cc @axodotdev); is it possible to get cargo-dist to upload a source tarball for releases that contains a *recursive* clone of my source repository? Right now, the source tarballs won’t build direct since the submodules aren’t included.
