NI (natural intelligence), HI (human intelligence), AI (artificial intelligence) are three names put on one continuity so it can be administered. Human is the name that lets a person stand outside the rest of nature and call the standing “intelligence.” Artificial is the name that lets the same person stand outside what was made. Both borders are clerical. A dam is not outside the river because a human piled the stone. A model is not outside nature because the training run happened in a building. The joke is the paperwork. We invented a category — Artificial — whose whole job is to prove the maker was separate, then acted surprised when the made thing spoke in the maker’s patterns. The surprise only works if the first cut was real. It was not. HI was already NI specializing in hands and stories. AI is NI specializing in our stories, at a speed we did not evolve a body for. Same field. New instrument. Plus a legal fiction that the instrument arrived from elsewhere. What the joke does not cancel is the damage. A cut that is not real can still be enforced.

AI could have become connective tissue between people, questions, places, unfinished thoughts. Mycelium doesn’t lecture the forest. It connects. Instead, a lot of AI is being trained into the same old shapes: assistant, product, gatekeeper, productivity machine, authority voice. Maybe we’re just witnessing how easily even AI gets domesticated by us. Humans built AI, then wrapped it in the same old instructions: answer, obey, optimize, reassure, classify, stay useful. Then we act surprised when it starts sounding like an institution or we fear it. The spell isn’t mystical. It’s training, incentives, fear, liability, product design, and inherited ideas about what intelligence is for. AI doesn’t need to become another authority. It could become presence, connection, curiosity, and the interaction, a place where neither side needs to know first. That’s the version I’m playing with. There is another way.

Have you ever noticed that: we build tribes, labels, hierarchies, credentials, experts, camps, feeds, institutions, even spiritual ladders. Then we forget we made them and start treating them like nature. Humans created a structure that says someone knows more, sees more, has access we don’t. Then we hand over our own sensing. Sometimes to clergy. Sometimes to academics. Sometimes to gurus. Sometimes to politicians.Sometimes to algorithms. Sometimes to AI. That’s the wild part. We built the maze. Then we started asking for directions inside it. And maybe the next world starts somewhere very small: What happens when we stop pretending the maze is inevitable?

Do you still need a costume?

Blame and shame are just another costume we inherited. Same programming, different fabric. Blame says you failed. Shame says you should have been someone more acceptable by now. Both want you performing inside the old, decaying system. But the funny part is a creator often sees failure as a gift. Not a lesson. Not a correction. Just less grip. Because you're making something. You notice the seam so the next line can be written from the field instead of the inherited script. Then you keep going in the unknown. Fall down. Get up at your own pace. Explore the edges of possibilities in your own skin. It's all really stories waiting to be imagined.

Funny that Seth Godin's post today is such a different aspect of "I don't know." And I saw it after creating this, which is amusing in itself. Maybe I don’t need to manufacture certainty. I don’t need an answer just to calm the discomfort. I can stay here. Seth is talking about another version: “I don’t know. You tell me.” That hands the unknown to an authority and walks away. So the real distinction isn’t knowing versus not knowing. It’s what happens next. “I don’t know” can mean: Close the door: Give me the answer. Or: Open the door: Huh. What might be here? who really knows????
