China’s gold imports have already surpassed last year’s full total, with more than 1,100 tonnes arriving in the first eight months of 2026 at a cost of $158.8 billion, against 886 tonnes and $96.5 billion for all of 2025. Official PBOC purchases account for only a fraction of the flow, roughly 80–100 tonnes reported year-to-date, including a 23-tonne addition in September that extended a 23-month buying streak and lifted holdings to about 2,410 tonnes. The rest is commercial and private demand moving through a quota system after gold’s 2025 rally left the metal cheaper in yuan terms following a pullback from above $5,500 to the $4,100–4,200 range. China still produces around 380 tonnes a year, yet keeps absorbing far more. This is opportunistic accumulation inside capital controls, not a pure de-dollarization crusade or household panic. It has cushioned the correction but failed to prevent a multi-hundred-dollar drawdown. The Chinese bid is a floor, not a ceiling.

Bitcoin just ripped to an 8-month high. And right now most people are calling it “ETF inflows + short squeeze” and stoping there. But that’s incomplete. Here’s what actually happened: • Spot Bitcoin ETFs absorbed nearly $1B in a single day, the strongest daily print in almost a year. • Over $650–900M in shorts got liquidated, creating forced buying. • Oil and yields softened at the same time, giving risk assets room to breathe. • The market absorbed a rate hike and a failed Clarity Act vote without breaking lower. This wasn’t pure FOMO, It was institutional demand meeting a crowded short book while the macro backdrop quietly improved. Now look at gold. Gold is sitting around $4,330–$4,380 and has been slightly softer while Bitcoin moved aggressively. The correlation between the two has been elevated for most of 2026, but this move looks more risk-on than pure hard-asset demand. #Bitcoin is still behaving more like a high-beta liquidity asset than true digital #gold right now. When real debasement pressure returns, both will likely move together again. Until then, treat the current divergence as information. The interesting signal isn’t the price. It’s where the buying is coming from, and whether it sticks

“Gold has even now but a few years to live.” Thomas Edison said this in 1911 while imagining what the world would look like a century later. To give him credit, several of his predictions were remarkably close. He anticipated routine air travel at 200 miles per hour, high-speed electric trains, increasingly automated production, and even the ability to carry an entire library in one compact object. He imagined pages made from nickel rather than a screen, but the underlying idea was there. Then he made a much bolder prediction. Edison believed humanity would soon learn to manufacture gold from ordinary metals. Gold would become as common and cheap as iron. Ships, taxis, and furniture could eventually be made from it. The official US price of gold was $20.67 per ounce at the time. In 2025, global gold demand exceeded 5,000 tonnes, while the metal recorded 53 new all-time highs. Edison understood how radically technology could reshape the world. He underestimated one thing. Every generation imagines a new future for money, and gold keeps showing up in it.

A clear breakdown of what’s shaping gold into September. Worth reading.
Warsh put inflation back on the table at Jackson Hole. September hike odds jumped from the mid-30s to above 50%. The 2-year repriced first. Gold and Bitcoin took the hit. That was the policy reset. U.S. strikes on Larak Island and Iran’s reply pushed Brent back through $90. A hawkish Fed and hotter oil in the same 72 hours tightens conditions before the FOMC even sits. Today adds the diplomatic layer. Bessent is hosting G20 finance chiefs in Asheville while Washington and Ottawa stare down tariffs that land September 8. The Treasury’s long-bond buybacks are still in the background. So is the fiscal stress that carried hard assets through August. Gold gave back part of the month’s surge. That does not kill the thesis. It shows the bid still answers to the front end. Bitcoin is under $80,000 for the same reason. September 16 is the next hard date. Friday’s payrolls decide how live that hike is. Hormuz decides whether oil stays a headline or becomes an inflation problem again. The last four months of the year will be decided by rates, oil, trade, and hard assets moving as one system. #Macro #Gold #Bitcoin #Oil #Fed #G20
