Pop culture is fleeting by nature. Why are boomer-X-ers under the belief that today’s youth should revere pop stars of bygone eras? Why, if so, from 60 years ago, and not 200? 1,400?
I was talking about this with my sister yesterday. When I was a child, I was very aware of who Errol Flynn, Cary Grant, Rudolf Valentino, Joan Crawford & Bette Davis were. I listened to the Benny Goodman orchestra and could sing songs by Cole Porter, Noël Coward or Carlos Gardel. I read loads and loads of books from all eras, from my Pocket Collins poetry anthology of sonnets that I carried with me everywhere, to Henry Miller's Tropics.
For children and young people today, History began in the year 2000. They either don't know or don't care and are historically illiterate.
