Ahead of John Healey's first Budget, a reminder that companies don’t pay tax - people do. And that also applies to energy suppliers and to banks.
In more technical terms, companies are only legal entities and cannot bear the economic burden of tax themselves. Tax increases are therefore always passed on to real people.
Shareholders will bear some of the cost through lower profits and dividends, although many 'ordinary' people own shares through their pension funds.
But customers will also pay through higher prices, while employees will face lower wages.
Everyone may lose if companies cut jobs and investment or move activity overseas.
So, whenever someone says, “companies should pay their fair share” or “tax banks, not workers”, ask them where the money will really come from… 🤔

PRE-BUDGET CHAOS
The Treasury Entrepreneurship advisor has quit in advance of the Budget next week, giving a scathing review of govt policy on her way out.
"If we truly want economic growth in the UK, we need to stop treating entrepreneurship and innovation as a sideshow".

I wonder if this will affect the Budget or its perception.
BREAKING
The Treasury’s entrepreneurship adviser has announced she is quitting.
Alex Depledge tells my colleague @hannahprevett start-ups are treated as a “sideshow” and a “nice to have”.
“Entrepreneurship can’t be seen as a good news bonus on the margins of economic policy. That mentality is really dangerous for British business as a whole…”
Depledge due to leave her role on Thursday, the day after the Budget.

FYI, the UK's new 'Energy Wealth Fund' is not remotely comparable to Norway's scheme, either in size (an initial £2 billion, vs £1.7 trillion), or objectives (to invest in renewable and low carbon energy infrastructure in the UK, vs generate the highest possible return from a global portfolio of mainly financial assets)... 🤷♂️

Every single sentence in your post is untrue.
Labour’s 2002 ‘deal’ had very little long-term impact on migrants trying to sneak into the UK by lorry/container/vehicles. It simply moved from Sangette to other routes.
Between 2014-2019 55,000 came in that way — an underestimate since many came in undetected and disappeared into society. Unlike boat people, nearly all of whom are counted.
So it’s an obvious nonsense to say people weren’t being sent back because nobody was arriving. Tens of thousands were arriving.
They switched to small boats when major advances in technology, perimeter defence of lorry/container parks and detection made lorries etc too risky to take.
That’s why, from 2018 onwards, the small boat numbers grew fast.
Nothing to do with EU, Brexit, Dublin rules, fairy dust etc. Why do you peddle such falsehoods?

In a serious country, this should be a resigning matter for the Treasury Permanent Secretary! Charging a 45% tax on all family businesses that are passed on would if implemented cause all such businesses to be shut down. In practice, even this government won't do it.
SE Business retweeted
Consultations like this, although cleared by Ministers, normally result from civil service initiatives. Which means that in the Treasury there are permanent officials who want to shut down the entire family business sector of the economy. (1/2) telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

GB Energy, the useless state-owned company established by Labour, has so far spent £14.2m on running costs — and £5.8m on investments.
Running costs included the almost £400,000/year paid to its ineffective CEO and six executives on more than £100,000 each. What any of them has done to earn these sums is one of life’s mysteries.
Perhaps it’s a blessing it’s invested so little. The £5.8m it has earmarked is for a proposed floating wind farm off the north coast of Scotland — a sure-fire loss-maker if ever there was one.

Ironic that the City itself doesn't want to realign with the EU, despite what Goldman Sachs is claiming about the economic benefits... 🤔
Some good pro-Brexit points here from the City, eg. how the financial services sector has gained from smarter regulation... 👍

A lot of people are talking as if the UK comes out as a growth winner in the latest IMF World Economic Outlook. In fact we come 150th out of the 185 countries for growth this year. Our growth figure is 1.3%; way below Taiwan with 10%; India at 7%; or Indonesia with 5%. (1/2)
SE Business retweeted
And worth noting when people talk about the UK and IMF - our debt is 95% and deficit 4.2%; France 119% and 5.4%; US 123% and 6%. We are in a mess because of tax rises; but its worse for other countries.

Extensive studies have shown that abolishing IHT boosts growth and eventually raises more finance than it loses. But I think she will have to go the whole way to abolition - cutting it for one asset class will cost quite a high proportion of abolition without the growth benefits.
