140 years ago today, a lady arrived in New York Harbor and never left. Most Americans don't know half her story. Here it is. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, on a rainy day. Her real name is "Liberty Enlightening the World." She was a gift from France. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed her, and Gustave Eiffel, the man behind the Eiffel Tower, built her iron skeleton. America almost couldn't afford the pedestal she stands on. Joseph Pulitzer saved the project by asking everyday Americans to donate, even pennies. President Grover Cleveland accepted her with a naval parade and New York's very first ticker-tape celebration. For millions of immigrants, she was the first thing they saw of America. They came legally, worked hard, and built the greatest country on Earth. She doesn't stand for open borders or handouts. She stands for liberty. Happy 140th birthday, Lady Liberty.
