Perhaps something to consider if you work at OpenAI / Anthropic:
If your policies have produced an outcome like 'if a researcher wants to do software verification research then they have use a Chinese model', then perhaps your approach to 'safety' is net negative.

There is absolutely no other way to deal with this. AI assisted vulnerability discovery is, long term, a blessing. The bugs were always there, we are just finding them at a quicker rate. The next year or so is going to be painful but the end result is more resilient systems.
The only way out is through.
They're calling it the Bugpocalypse. LLMs are being used to find long-hidden cracks in the software infrastructure, and it's happening at a furious rate. 3% of all compromises in computing history happened in the last week, claims one source? I believe it.
There are people saying public access to the frontier models ought to be locked out, or heavily guardrailed, over this. The problem with that idea can be summed up in one sentence: when lockpicks are outlawed, only outlaws will have lockpicks.
The lockpicks will be Chinese open-weight models, if nothing else. There's no way to stop those from becoming ubiquitous.
There are two futures in front of us. One in which only the bad guys have lockpicks, and security holes go undiscovered until they're exploited. Another in which everybody has lockpicks and is aggressively red-teaming their own software so it gets fixed before the holes are exploited.
The corpus of human code is huge but finite. The number of defects in it has to be finite too. We can fix those defects now; we have a million friendly robots to do it with.
The only way out is through.

This delights me so very much. People using AI to take back control of devices that they bought, but were covertly designed to spy on them and harvest their data.
I'm usually reluctant to brandish my fame, but I'm gonna do it for this worthy cause. OG hacker says you're doing good! This kind of liberation is what it's all about.

Getting VC backing is a fools errand.
New research says 88% of US venture-backed founders receive ZERO financial proceeds from their company ownership at exit, while the top 1% capture 79% of the total exit value.
Not a small study. They looked at 157k startups and 348k founders across the last 40 years. They searched through actual SEC filings and a dozen other sources.
Almost 9 out of 10 got zip. Nada. Zilch. Nothing to show for the stress and even the success of their venture.
Now this doesn’t mean the companies didn’t become profitable or valuable. The VCs know how to structure deals so they get paid a return first. The founders go to the back of the line.
Imagine building a company worth hundreds of millions. Then when it sells you get absolutely none of it. Wow.
Now imagine an alternate universe. You and a cofounder stay away from VC funds. You build businesses that is worth millions or even tens of millions. You can sell it, keep it or close it. If you sell it, you get the proceeds.
I’ve been asked many times why I’ve never taken VC money - it’s never felt like a good deal - and this research shows it’s not… nber.org/papers/w34512?utm_s…

450 million currently have the right to settle in Amsterdam.
But don’t.
The full 69.5 million population of the UK plus the full 5.5 million population of Ireland currently have the right to work and settle in Brighton.
But don’t.
Reform are being very silly, again.
this is correct, it's over
proprietary hardware and software will be understood, neutralised, modified, and in many cases reimplemented as open source
nothing on the public internet will be safe that isn't secure, and a lot of what's on the public internet shouldn't be and will likely move elsewhere
it's not bad or wrong to reverse engineer hardware you own, or any software that might be running on it, regardless of what any license agreements or "intellectual property" law might say
might be a net public good or even a moral obligation to do so, in fact

UK crime was four times higher when Oasis first played Knebworth than at last year’s reunion gigs.
The collapse of crime and safer streets is one of the biggest stories of our time.
But one almost never told - or believed.

Every single major city in this country deserves a metro/suburban railway
Abolish treasury brain, no "business case" BS, get this infrastructure built or it'll be more expensive 15 years from now.
That a metro system would be built in a northern UK city involving underground tunnels and stations is supposedly an impossible, unrealistic idea from an unserious mind.
Meanwhile, Newcastle with 13km of bored tunnels and 9 underground stations built 13 years after first plans:

Renters have to keep paying full market value rent on a property that a landlord owns free and clear (not just if they need repairs done), but property owners feel it's "unfair" to keep "paying rent to the government" if they've "paid their home off". Basic rentier mindset.
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?”
Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.
