Hangovers are the opposite of Father Christmas in that you stop believing they exist until they happen 🥂😶🌫️
‘but what was truly frightful was.. this gigantic, unapproachable regime, which hardly gives a hint of anything unsettling, and which is there continuously exerting its influence unquestioned, and which determines everything that eventually.. annihilates us’ (Weiss, aofr, vol 3)
Dreamt last night I was in a car with Exeter’s vice chancellor and that she was boasting to me about how she had filled Exeter with the most glorious fake plastic trees, and that because I was drunk and heedless I said ‘but why the hell did you uproot all the real trees?’
‘The masses of those who had no more to offer than their desperation swelled, and desperation was the most worthless of all superfluous things’ (Peter Weiss, The Aesthetics of Resistance, III)

In which I, in the spirit of pre-standardised Medieval English, succeed in spelling Cheshire in three different ways
Just finished Gawain in the nick of time to teach on it later and bloody hell it’s a marvel & so ill served by my ancient undergraduate memory of the first read. Long live pearls more priceless than any white pea 🥰 🔥
It’s striking about Gawain and the Green Knight how untranslatable it is, how paraphrases would ruin it how, how analogous versions of its metre would be bound to sound fake, how a film adaptation would drain the intensity from the big colours by providing them all at once.

I’ve been writing about losing language, and this passage, in which Daniel Heller-Roazen reads a Kafka parable via Freud and Jakobson, is so moving to me: what if the person who seems to have forgotten how to speak instead remembers too well the period that came before?
❤️ how in Gawain and the Green Knight the first indication that anything untoward is about to happen is the sheer greenness of the knight, how even his horse is green, that he’s greener than any grass you’ve even seen 💚
