Kenneth Floyd sets his own price for beef at Sussex Ranch in Comfort, Texas. A whole steer is $3,200, a half $1,700. The plant that kills it is not on the ranch. SussexRanch.com sells them off a legacy Red Angus herd crossed 50/50 with Akaushi, the Japanese Red Wagyu from Kumamoto. The cattle run grass then grain on rotated Hill Country pasture in Kendall County and water out of Cypress Creek, with no hormones or antibiotics. A whole steer yields about 500 pounds of take-home beef, which puts the ranch price at $6.40 a pound before processing. The same animal on the October 21 board, $231.12 a hundredweight, is $2.31 a pound live. The kill and the cut come off a plant the ranch books rather than owns. The customer pays it directly, and the ranch only says processor location may vary based on availability. Two to three months is the wait. The carcass hangs at least 14 days, and beef is picked up at the plant. Texas runs its own meat inspection but never joined the federal cooperative interstate shipment program, so beef crossing a state line has to come off a federally inspected rail. $400 buys the reservation. The other $2,800 comes due the day the steer reaches the plant.

Heather raised 30 chickens in a tractor on grass, processed the whole batch, and sat down to eat one. She did not like it. It is because it has flavor and I was not used to it. The chicken was darker than grocery store meat, all of it, and the flavor just existed, and she was not sure what to do with it. Her children were 18 months and seven and a half. They ate it up happily. It was her that had to get used to it, and it took all 30 birds. Store bought milk tastes like water to her family now. And then the part that matters. There is a richness and flavor to farm raised meat and dairy that does not exist in the grocery store.

A chef tried to ruin this beef, overcooked it and let it sit out, and said it was still good. His word for it: bullet-proof. Ross Andrew runs a kitchen and saw it at the plate, not in a lab. Flavor that survives the cook. BetterFedFoods.com

Theo Von told Lindsay Owens where he shops when he is tired of being played with, and it is an Amish produce stand on the corner. He takes six or seven things and the price is always the same. She had just explained where that began to break. Wanamaker's in Philadelphia sold under one price and goods returnable, and pricing has gone high-tech since. Companies figured out how to reinvent the rip-off. It is not new, she says. They are just using technology to get better at it. And then what actually fixes it. Aldi is running commercials saying it will not use electronic shelf labels, a direct answer to Walmart. Consumers have to get angry enough that somebody gains by not ripping them off.

Fairhaven Colony in Montana bred 98 heifers and got two open. They called that the best result in recent years, good weather years included. Body condition going into breeding is most of the answer. BetterFedFoods.com

One beef plant in Peabody, Kansas took $2 million of the $3,973,385 the state got. The other nine Kansas plants split the rest, and the smallest check was $116,280. Secretary Brooke Rollins named them at the El Dorado Livestock Auction Monday. Plainview Beef's share is 50.3% of the Kansas total. The money is USDA's Phase 4 processing expansion grants. 31 of the 147 awards are public so far. @SecRollins @USDA @usdaRD @KAKEnews @TonsorGlynn @kstateagecon

A grant list is a map of who can kill and cut beef in your state. The other half of it is which plants take outside cattle and which only run their own brand. BeefMaps.com lists the ranches that sell their own beef, straight to the people eating it. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ BeefMaps.com

Bred 45 first-time heifers in late 2020 and every one of them came back pregnant. Mike Muili, western Montana, 50 years ranching: he says that was the first time he had seen a 100% at that stage. A result like that starts in the ration. BetterFedFoods.com

The reality is this- The food will be grown no matter what! The farmers that are in trouble sell out and the small independents beside them canโ€™t afford to give $22,000/a for ground! So bigger and bigger operators or corporate investors buy this land and rent it to big operators. Think The Grapes of Wrath. Thatโ€™s the reality. Itโ€™s not a great situation
NOBODY IS TELLING YOU HOW FUCKED THE FARMERS ARE IN AMERICA RIGHT NOW. The Agriculture Secretary just confirmed it publicly. 1 in 4 American farmers has NO fertilizer secured for spring planting. No fertilizer. No crops. No food. Farm bankruptcies are up 46% in 2025. 160,000 farms closed since 2017. Less than half of all farmers will even turn a profit this year. They're not struggling. They're being wiped out. And the media is busy covering everything else. The real story behind this hasn't been told yet.. follow me because i'm about to tell it ๐Ÿšจ

Wyoming lost 776 beginning farmers and ranchers between 2017 and 2022. The farms left got bigger: 12 percent fewer of them, 12 percent more acres apiece. Jim Magagna of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association says the neighbors who used to buy the place next door are gone. The association has run 21 half-day succession sessions in four years. @daily_cowboy @usda_nass @UWyonews

Two things a buyer notices at the chute: how the bulls test and how the calves handle. Wilson Angus, western Montana: 42 of 43 bulls tested very well and were calmer to handle. Calves acted noticeably quieter when weighed and loaded. That is what BetterFedFoods.com is built for.

Thomas Massie says one bill would let the butcher in your town sell you a neighbor's beef. He thinks it would get 80 or 90 votes in the Senate. Washington went the other way. It bought 300,000 metric tons of lean trimmings for grinding at 75 percent of the cost. The only way you get something at 75 percent of the cost is somebody else did not want it. He calls that order a bailout for the fast-food industry. That is his read of it, not the paperwork. The bill is the PRIME Act. A sale inside a state is none of the federal government's business. The county health department can regulate the cutter the same way it regulates a restaurant.
