Huge respect to the organizers, activists and voters of Brazil and Serbia. These results are due to so much work and they give us so much hope. There is nothing inevitable about the far right.

My column for @FT: In contrast to many established democracies, where voter registration has historically been dependent on individual initiative, in India the state assumed the burden. That reversal is at the heart of a growing political confrontation giftarticle.ft.com/giftartic…

A journalist covering socio-economic or political issues not knowing Jean is akin to a sports journalist not knowing Sachin Tendulkar. The journo's hubris of not knowing was worse than not knowing. But you should know! Yet you deny giving due credit to Jean's work. That's a pity!

Do not for a minute assume it was just an ignorant question. This was done deliberately to drown out Jean Dreze's voice and to minimise who he is so his protest seems insignificant. Those who don't know how nefarious newsrooms work might mistake this to be a mistake. It's a strategy.
A reporter is asking Jean Drèze “Bhaisaab aap ho kaun?” A damning indictment of how low Indian media has fallen.

Last time I checked the constitution guarantees the right to movement and free assembly. And the reports are all of people detained while assembling peacefully. No weapons or riot gear etc. The last time someone cracked down like this on peaceful assembly was during the Emergency. These are dictatorial and unconstitutional actions irrespective of which side of the political spectrum you belong to.

Jean Drèze was offered freedom after 4 hours in detention. He refused to leave w/o his fellow detainees, many poor Muslims. After 11 hours, police relented. They walked out together Oh, and when shown the video of a journalist asking who he was, he laughed: “That was hilarious" Don't miss this story from @khanthefatima 1/2 #DelhiProtest

Anyone who cares to "read" will know Jean Dreze, even if one does not agree with his scholarship. I may not agree with him on all things, but I have deep respect for his scholarship. He is not someone who has confined his scholarship to peer reviewed journals that one may not know him. He is a public intellectual who has written extensively in mainstream media engaging with critical issues such as right to food, livelihood, poverty and inequality. A reporter or a journalist not knowing about him means that the reporter needs to spend more time reading. It will help the reporter become a better journalist..
Why should a young reporter know who Jean Dreze is? If he/she doesn’t know & asks him, it is what a reporter is supposed to do. Ask. Just coz he was in NAC during UPA (years ago) doesn’t make him a recognisable face to young reporters. The know it all ‘seniors’ need to chill
