Light touch paper and stand well back. Gotcha.
Social justice journalist Lisa Durden MELTS DOWN on air after getting absolutely wrecked about the riots in France by conservative commentator Ben Ferguson. Durden claimed the riots were just “student protests,” but Ferguson wasn’t about to let that slide, and he had the receipts to back it up. Then he delivered a brutal reality check that sent Durden into a fit of RAGE. FERGUSON: “You either have to be incredibly incompetent or totally blind to look at the images and think that this is students that are doing this.” Durden immediately snapped. DURDEN: “What you’re not going to do is call me a pathological liar!” “I’m talking now! You’re not going to call me a pathological liar because you don’t know me, so stop that right now!” “EXCUSE YOU!” Katie Pavlich did her best to keep the show from going completely off the rails.

😳 @JohnSwinney telling the Easdale brothers to “watch their language” rather neatly illustrates the very attitude they're complaining about. He's the @ScotGovFM of Scotland, not the nation's headmaster. His job is to answer criticism, not to expel people who express it in terms he finds disagreeable. I've experienced this culture myself. Challenge a policy, question a funding decision or expose an uncomfortable truth, and suddenly the conversation becomes about your tone, your language or your attitude. Anything, it seems, except the substance of what you've actually said. It's a remarkably convenient way of avoiding difficult questions while making the person asking them the problem. Democracy is not simply the right to vote every few years. It also requires the freedom to challenge those in power without fearing that your livelihood, funding, reputation or opportunities will suffer as a consequence. And that is where my criticism of the SNP goes considerably further than its apparent dislike of dissent. My concern, informed by my own experience, is that criticism can carry identifiable institutional consequences, while compliance and political conformity can bring equally identifiable advantages. That is a far more serious allegation than a government being thin-skinned, and it deserves proper scrutiny. The Easdales have the resources and public profile to challenge the government openly. Many smaller organisations, particularly those dependent on public funding, do not enjoy that luxury. For them, the perceived price of speaking out can be enough to ensure silence. A government doesn't have to ban criticism to discourage it. It merely has to create an environment in which people believe there is a price to pay for speaking their minds. So perhaps, rather than lecturing his critics about their manners, the First Minister might reflect on why people feel compelled to use such strong language in the first place. Democracy isn't a classroom, Mr Swinney. The electorate aren't your pupils, and disagreement isn't a disciplinary offence.
Scotland’s First Minister has told a bus company boss to watch his language after he branded him a dictator over plans to bring the country’s bus network under public control. i.stv.tv/4zDMZjI

The day-one Scottish currency proposal rests on the assumption that a new, untested currency can be introduced at or near full equivalence (parity) with sterling, with minimal disruption to wages, pensions, savings and debts. That assumption does not hold under standard economic conditions or historical experience. Scotland’s notional fiscal position under current arrangements shows a large structural deficit—£25.3 billion, or 10.9% of GDP, in the latest GERS figures. Combined with an external deficit, this is incompatible with markets treating a new floating currency as equivalent to sterling on introduction. Independent analyses (including from NIESR, the Institute for Government and macroeconomists such as Ronald MacDonald) have repeatedly indicated that an initial depreciation of 20–30% is a plausible outcome. That would immediately reduce the real value of incomes paid in the new currency relative to sterling-denominated liabilities. Around 900,000 Scottish mortgages (with tens of billions outstanding) and substantial corporate and public-sector debts remain denominated in sterling. There is no automatic conversion. If wages and public payments switch to the new currency while debts stay in sterling, a depreciation raises the local-currency cost of servicing those debts. Scottish Currency Group material itself notes that conversion of loans would be optional and would lag behind deposits; the risk of mismatch is therefore real and falls on households and firms. Import prices would also rise, feeding inflation and further eroding real purchasing power for those paid in the new unit. The Ireland comparison does not remove these problems. Ireland operated a currency-board arrangement fully backed by sterling assets, with explicit convertibility at par via the Bank of England acting as agent. Commercial banks held large sterling reserves. That self-backed parity lasted decades under conditions of high integration and sterling-area membership; it was not an unsupported free float. No equivalent institutional backstop or convertibility guarantee would exist for Scotland, and UK governments have long ruled out formal arrangements. Markets would price the difference immediately. Claims that money creation by a sovereign issuer removes these constraints overlook the binding limits of real resources, external financing and investor willingness to hold the new currency. A floating rate can adjust, but the adjustment occurs through lower real wages, higher debt-service costs and potential capital outflows precisely the effects on financial security that the proposal treats as secondary. The SNP’s own published policy of a transitional sterling period before any new currency “as soon as practicable” reflects recognition of these risks; the day-one alternative front-loads them without demonstrated preparation for the scale of the deficit or the debt stock. These are measurable exposures, not abstract theory. Any serious proposal must quantify the expected depreciation, the share of sterling liabilities that cannot be quickly redenominated, the inflation pass-through, and the institutional capacity to manage the transition. Wishful assertions of near-equivalence do not substitute for that analysis.

This has to be the best tweet of the week by @mcgillswest . “Sandy Easdale, who owns McGill's alongside his brother James, said Swinney "appears to have transformed into the next Idi Amin or Robert Mugabe". "Both men, incidentally, who bankrupted their countries through catastrophic financial policies," he added”. Communism didn’t work in Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. However the SNP have a new kind of kid-on Communism by state ownership and keeping people in Pandora boxes of the freebies. This type of policy does not drive an economy or support people where they need support into work. The country is already bankrupt by £5 Billion.

thetimes.com/uk/scotland/art… Peggie, the nurse who was suspended after objecting to sharing a female changing room with a transgender doctor, has called for NHS Scotland to follow suit. She said: “I welcome this common sense guidance from NHS England which makes clear that patients’ biological sex will determine which hospital wards they will be accommodated in. The safety, privacy and dignity of female patients shouldn’t depend on where they are hospitalised in Great Britain.” She added: “The rights of female hospital patients in Scotland must no longer be sacrificed because of gender ideology and NHS Scotland must now urgently commit to implementing similar guidance.” We agree @NHSScotland can no longer ignore the right of women in hospital to privacy, dignity and safety

Proudly displaying degrees in Economics and Law in your bio while responding to a serious governance challenge with a three-word slogan is a spectacular intellectual concession. If you actually applied your economics training, you would acknowledge that an independent Scotland inheriting a massive structural deficit while launching an unbacked fiat currency guarantees an immediate sovereign risk premium and severe capital flight. If you applied your legal training, you would know that Holyrood has zero legal competence to force foreign-domiciled banks to redenominate Sterling mortgage contracts, mathematically guaranteeing a devastating cross-border financial mismatch. Retreating into “We want independence” the second the Prime Minister challenges your party's relentless centralisation of power proves your constitutional worldview relies entirely on ignoring the very subjects you claim to have studied.😂

Demanding that the UK Government “scrap the Energy Profits Levy” while your own party conference just passed a motion demanding that North Sea tax revenues be poured into a Scottish “Future Generations Fund” is a masterclass in fiscal contradiction. You cannot promise the Scottish electorate a sovereign wealth fund built entirely on the massive tax receipts of the fossil fuel industry while simultaneously lobbying Westminster to give those same fossil fuel giants a multi-billion-pound tax cut. Furthermore, branding a corporate windfall tax a “tax on jobs” is a staggering hypocrisy from an administration that has deliberately engineered the highest income tax rates in the UK for ordinary Scottish workers and professionals. Finally, your sudden switch to protecting the North East directly contradicts years of your own government's official presumption against new North Sea drilling. You cannot spend years actively obstructing the oil and gas sector to appease your former Green coalition partners, only to suddenly pretend you are the industry's greatest defender the second your polling collapses. Dishonest John yet again.

Robert Jenrick absolutely bodybagged the BBC on its own radio show this morning. When challenged over vetting, @RobertJenrick fired back: “Can you now give a guarantee to your listeners this morning that no BBC presenter in the future will be exposed as a paedophile as a number have been in the recent past? No of course you can’t.” The BBC has a history of deeply disturbing scandals involving its own presenters, yet has the audacity to lecture others about vetting. An elite level takedown of a publicly funded broadcaster with some serious skeletons in its own cupboard.
