Can I just say what a magnificent club Aston Villa are. A really top club. A BIG club. As big as any in the world, maybe even the universe. And what a superb fanbase too. Top, top, top fanbase. Genuinely, just full marks all round.

FT 0-3 Bournemouth made 8 changes, looked cohesive, front foot and attacking. Looked like a team. Villa looked reactive, passive and something not often said about an Emery team, disinterested. The League Cup & FA Cup should always be on the Villa radar, both are realistic trophies for where Villa are. That key players were rested, even with a busy schedule is false economy. The League isn't going to be won, neither is Champions League, but both are being managed now, well. So resting in form players in a winnable Cup makes no sense. Disappointed for the 1000 odd travelling Villans, can't say it often in the Emery era but they weren't rewarded with even 50% of a Villa performance.

Nicolas Jackson rarely looked an elite-level striker at Chelsea. Decent goal record, 30 in 81, but missed a lot of chances and got caught offside a lot. Jackson offside every 98 minutes at Chelsea (PL). At Villa, only every 128 minutes (PL). Reunited with the alchemist Emery. Decision-making improved. Emery filled him full of belief. Jackson knows how much Emery rates him. Worked together for a season at Villarreal, where Emery improved Jackson’s positioning and made his runs more targeted and effective. Reunited, Jackson has 7 goals in 11 already under Emery at Villa. So hard-working, pressing, holding ball up, linking (well with McGinn and Manzambi) and scoring goals like that against Manchester City. Wrong-footed Anderson, gave Donnarumma no chance. Giving Guehi an uncomfortable time. #AVLMCI #AVFC

Someone said "watch Mobland". I've never watched Sopranos, Breaking Bad etc because watching 200 episodes rather than a 90 minute film is a lot of concentrating. So I watched episode 1 at 8pm and went to bed after episode 10 around 4am. It's mind blowingly good. Anything similar, please let me know! Tom Hardy is 👏🏽👏🏽

10 years ago today Villa drew 1-1 away at Preston in the Championship and were on an 11 game winless run. Di Matteo was sacked 2 days later. Today I’ve just bought a ticket to see Villa play Barcelona away in the Nou Camp. Stuff of dreams. Thank you Unai Emery UTV 🤯 #avfc

Unai Emery absolutely deserves this more than anybody. The rules aren’t made for Aston Villa to compete - but he has kept us consistent in European Football as he enters his 19th year in a row in Europe in his managerial career. He gets a ridiculous amount of disrespect from other clubs, but Unai Emery is a top 3 manager in the world. #AVFC

Villa incomings, overall rating ( immediate and future potential, age, resale value) out of 10. Mbaye 9( 18, huge potential, huge resale potential, comes from a winning culture but patience needed as the Premier League is unforgiving, so consistency and plenty of time is key) Manzambi 9( 20, good experience at World and club level already, silky, direct running midfielder. Every attribute needed in his position and some ) Suzuki 9 (23, a baby in goalkeeping terms but a real presence, confident, already used to having a high profile in Japan. Kicking is elite and particularly on away days can turn defence into attack with one drilled ball to an Mbaye/Jackson/Garnacho etc) Gomes 8( 25, impetuous, but there's a very good "ratter" in there who'll get through a ton of work. A few bad habits need clipping, symptom of a player coming from a relegated team but Unai will straighten him out ) Jackson 7( 25, approaching peak striker output years, always neat and tidy outside of the box, needs to now get in in it a lot more and be supplied. Can't underestimate Unai influence on him) Harwood-Bellis 7 ( 24 so plenty of development left. Steady, dependable. Exactly what's needed alongside Pau) Ruggeri 8 ( You don't play for Simeone unless you've got ultra work rate and dependability. Looks like his arrival has already brought an uptick in Maatsen, so win win.) Goretzka 7( people talking about him as if he's 44. He's 31. Senior international, been there, done it. A much needed dressing room leadership figure after losing 3 if the leaders group) Garnacho 3 or 8( Last chance saloon at 22. Doesn't work here, it'll be the Saudi /USA payday circuit. If we get the player for Chelsea at VP last season, it's an 8. We'll see..) AWB 6 ( 28, experienced, personally not a fan of relegated players, they often come with the standards and habits from whence they came. One for Unai to get into)

Villa Park will tonight pay tribute to the legendary Jimmy Rimmer, who sadly passed away earlier this month. Jimmy's family will be in attendance and there will be a period of applause ahead of kick-off 💜

A thought on football… Man Utd, who haven’t been a great team for many years, have now bought three (more) expensive midfielders. Aston Villa, who won a European trophy, have to sell to avoid punishment. The system, which was supposed to impose financial stability, now does everything to preserve the advantage of the top teams. There is almost no jeopardy for them and no path to the top for the rest. It works if you see the Premier League as basically five or six famous teams, with a supporting cast who don’t really matter. And that, I suspect, is a lot of people, around the world. If your passion is solely for the famous clubs and the superstar players, then fine. There’s a half-and-half scarf waiting for you. But for the rest of us, there is a gnawing feeling of disconnect and disappointment, exacerbated by the actions of FIFA. When I grew up, watching from the terraces at Upton Park, football was a game that belonged to the fans. Does it still?

Jeez @Carra23 talking about £50 million + signing, Ezri Konsa being a useful squad player for Arsenal is everything that’s wrong with these financial rules (Not a dig at Carra, it’s the reality). Arsenal able to sign a team that finished 4th and won a trophy, like it’s picking off a relegated side. The game just isn’t what it should be.
