Bridging the gap between digitally transformed professional practice and professional governance will require training new professionals to do so.
@seanmmcdonald and @bengansky explore the role of professional education programs to address this.

How do professional governance organizations teach their members how to navigate digital transformation in their fields of practice?
This paper by @seanmmcdonald and @bengansky explains:

📢NEW PAPER!
Where @davidthewid, @sarahbmyers & I unpack what Open Source AI even is.
We find that the terms ‘open’ & ‘open source’ are often more marketing than technical descriptor, and that even the most 'open' systems don't alone democratize AI 1/

Deeply disturbing insights from @algorithmwatch's newsletter:
The C4 data set, which is used to train large language models such as ChatGPT, is extremely biased towards seeing AI as a super-intelligence over what it is - (part of) a socio-technical system.

You really, really should not be relying on AI detectors for classroom use.

I strongly agree w concerns about the concentration of AI power, but disagree that open source AI provides respite. In many respects increased corporate control has happened not in spite of OSS but through capturing it. More soon on this from @davidthewid @mer__edith and me.

Some background in case you're wondering what this is all about:
Indirect prompt injection is when an LLM is asked to analyze some text on the web and instead starts to take instructions from that text. Right now there's no good way to defend against it! greshake.github.io/

I keep thinking about the early days of the mainstream Internet, when worms caused massive data loss every few weeks. It took decades of infosec research, development, and culture change to get out of that mess.
Now we're building an Internet of hackable, wormable LLM agents.

Let's be clear: $1.8b for "AI" translates to ~$1.8b handed to Big Tech companies to license infrastructure, data, and APIs.
AI is a corporate technology.
This is a subsidy to the richest companies in the world, justified via rewarmed cold war imaginaries.
DOD is asking for $1.8bn for AI for 2024. Kathleen Hicks, deputy US defense secretary, tells Bloomberg such funding “will probably grow over time as we incorporate the technology effectively into how we operate.”
