Hugely enjoyed @RedPrinceplay tonight, a funny and painfully accurate dramatisation of the Starmer epoch. Running for another week at the Lion & Unicorn, Kentish Town.

"I wanted to write something about where we are politically, culturally... A serious-though-funny attempt to tackle politics as it is, and politicians - particularly politicians a bit further down the food chain - as they are."

Following the seismic shift of the 2024 General Election, the UK political landscape has been ripe for theatrical dissection.
Enter The Red Prince.
@EveryTheatre caught up with the show’s creative team (writer Tim Dawson, director Susan Nickson and performer Benjamin May) to find out how they translated the headlines of the last few years into a study of power and pragmatism.

"This isn't simply a comedy about Westminster mishaps. It's also - delightfully - about cushions full of cash, pickled onion Space Raiders, and the going rate for human connection in Greater Manchester. Which suggests this isn't going to be polite drawing room satire.
"I may not usually do red. But when it comes wrapped in satire, cynicism and a slightly crumpled constituency office carpet... I'll make an exception."
Grace Hatchell on The Red Prince for Theatre Village.

Craig Kitman MP didn’t sign up for this.
It’s been 18 months since Labour’s “loveless landslide” swept him into Parliament. 18 months of voting for things he doesn’t understand. Constituents he can’t help. Abuse. Failure. Late-night drinking sessions.
And so we find him.
One man. One constituency office. Wondering how he got here - and how the hell he gets out.
Then, terrier-like journo Abi McCormack calls. Things are about to get a lot worse...
THE RED PRINCE is a comedy about loneliness, inadequacy, and the people we elect to run our country.
It’s about what happens when the system selects for emptiness - and what these empty men do when no one’s watching.
It’s also about cushions full of cash, pickled onion Space Raiders, and the going rate for human connection in Greater Manchester.
Craig Kitman is not a bad man. He’s just not up to it.
Then again - who is?
Written by Tim Dawson.
Directed by Susan Nickson.
Performed by Benjamin May.
