The Aztecs, with only 5 returnees from last year’s team, are favored over Long Beach State. It will also be a chance for Dutch to look at various lineups & try to build strong team chemistry as well as get all of his players healthy going into the rugged non-conference schedule.

The rebuilt Aztecs have dropped two straight exhibition games — to No. 5 Arizona & No. 21 USC. And although there have been some promising moments, the Aztecs still need to play better defense, shoot a higher percentage from the perimeter & rebound at a higher clip.

Also on Acker’s current coaching staff is Phil Scott, a longtime basketball trainer from Southern California who worked closely with Lamont Butler during his four years in an Aztec uniform. Scott & Acker have worked together for years but are now trying to build the LBS program.

Long Beach State is coached by Chris Acker, who was hired in 2024 after spending 5 successful seasons under SDSU’s Brian Dutcher when the Aztecs went 134-34 & reached the NCAA title game vs. UConn during the 2023-24 season. Acker is highly respected in the Aztecs program.

I once heard a coach tell his best shooter that if you’re in a shooting slump, go to the FT line in practice & shoot a lot of free throws to work on your muscle memory technique & regain confidence. Then in games, let the game come to you & take quality shots. #LatrellDavis

I’ve seen Latrell work out a handful of times, & like Coach Dutcher & Aztec teammates know, LD can flat out shoot & score the ball. Once he relaxes & gets quality shots, he’ll make a lot of them. It isn’t easy sitting out a year & then trying to play perfect. LD will be fine.

In a nutshell, that advice may help Aztec guard Latrell Davis, who has had a bumpy start in 2 exhibitions. But LD, still hampered by a tender shoulder, can really shoot the ball & once he’s healthier & lets the game play out to find quality shots, he’ll knock down a bunch of 3’s.

It’s pretty cool that 2 former UCSD teammates — Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones & Hayden Gray — are battling to make an NBA G League team. Ani, who played his first 3 years at UH-Hilo, is on the Coachella Valley Lakers roster while Hayden is on the Maine Celtics roster. Good luck to both.

Shot Ready: Coach Brian Dutcher says Oregon State transfer Isaiah Se is one of the best shooters he’s seen at SDSU & will be a dangerous 3-point threat all season. Isaiah tells @JakeGaregnani that he’s excited to play this year & help the promising Aztecs go as far as they can.
“A lot of shooting. A lot of threes...”    After two years at Oregon State, the sharpshooting @isaiah_sy brings his talents to San Diego State. Get to know the senior hoping to light it up in the Aztecs backcourt.

Good stuff: @SportsOnTheMesa shares some thoughts on San Diego State’s exhibition loss to No. 21 USC at Viejas — including being better defensively vs. perimeter shooters, cutting down on turnovers & developing a more consistent offense where Aztec shooters will hit open shots.
