Look for the positives. Nature’s reset button is in action! Low-intensity surface fires in NH’s Wild River Wilderness clear dry underbrush, recycle vital soil nutrients, and open the canopy for new growth and diverse wildlife habitats. Resilience at its finest!

Thinking about the Wild River Fire. Ironically, a fire in 1903 in the same location helped create the WMNF. Fire caught on logging slash and ripped through thousands of acres. Stopped the logging in Hastings (ME) cold. Public outrage helped pass the Weeks Act. Rest is history.

You may think "yuck" but last night I made 5C of bone broth with chicken feet, onion, carrots, garlic etc. Wow. It gelled up overnight in the fridge. The high collagen inside made it simple, especially with the instant pot. 10 min prep, 1.5hrs cook. Less than $4 to make.

As I was touring Chillon Castle in Switzerland, I saw these barrels. I have kids so I'm familiar with Harry Potter. I said "We must be near the Hufflepuff Common Room Entrance, anyone know the password?" All the 60+ yo just looked at me. Pulled in my collar "Tough Crowd"

Deep lowering of Winnisquam this year. It's temporary. Now's the time to work on your dock. The river section is down to a skim coat. All the rocks are exposed.

Regular jam is excessively sweet to me. I found a "fresh jam" recipe using frozen fruit, lemon juice, very little maple syrup and (the secret ingredient to ensure a gel) chia seeds. Sets rather quickly. Fruit forward, spreadable and not 50% added sugar like standard. Yum!

Kids are all grown up so it's time to celebrate Halloween with friends. Outdoor fire pit and movie. Bundled up with some blankets for a comfortable night. Happy Halloween New Hampshire. Hopefully The Great Pumpkin brings you something sweet.

Battery Point, Lake Massabesic. Site of militia encampments (possibly cannon or artillery battery, hence the name), steamboat era resort and now protected under water management rules. It supplies drinking water to the Manch-hatten area and worth the walk.

When Middleton NH wanted to separate from Brookfield ~1794, it was difficult for surveyors to work around the Moose Mts so they used existing squared off lot lines to ensure property owners were in the same tax district (and County). Result? Unique sawtooth boarder.

In Franconia Notch since 1938, the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway was North America’s first passenger tram dedicated to skiers. Rising 2,180 vert feet in under ten min, it's a cool trip to take. Ketchup and mustard are currently being replaced with some budget issues. Ketchup ⬇️

Corn reached NH indigenous pop around 500-800AD. Flint Corn; which could grow fast, stored better, 8 rows per ear. Nixtamalization followed it. Boiled in wood ash to release niacin. Pellagra affected settlers while they were not just by using this one technique. Fascinating!

Quincy Bog in Rumney was a good take. Saved from development decades ago. Some people avoid wetlands but they are some of the most diverse ecosystems in the state. It has a loop trail with this interesting bridge. My fav was a wood duck mom with babies. Worth a trip.

NH is tied to Ft Sumpter. 70k tons of granite were dumped into Charleston Harbor to build up the base to above sea level. Quite a bit came from NH. The Storm Flag here flew through the initial attack and was brought back after control was retaken. Flown over NH soil (rock).

Last night I was browsing NH on Google Maps. Decided to look at Canobie Lake Park. In the back they have the old USA Missile. It was an old cheesy "burner" ride we went on if we had a leftover "star" on our ride ticket and not enough for the Dodge-Em (my favorite). Memories

Seacoast drive today now that the crowds are gone. Hampton Beach. Drive Rt 1A through Rye. Isle of Shoals were beautiful with the crisp air. Cape Ann in the distance (MA). The secret is to take Rt 1B through New Castle and sneak into Portsmouth that way for the best views.

10 min of prep. 2 weeks vac bag curing in the fridge. 2.5hrs smoking. My pork butt buckboard bacon is ready. Chill then slice this weekend. More meaty. Way better than grocery store and $2.50/lb. I have 3-4lbs of it. Worth the (little) effort and wait.

Dow Academy Bldg, Franconia, NH. Residential housing now but was the local school then part of a college. I'm fascinated by clocks. Originally hand wound to lift the weights. Clock is by Boston's, E. Howard & Co. Gifted bell. I look at it whenever I'm on my way to Sugar Hill.

Back in 2011, you could hire a biplane out of Laconia Airport. Anniversary gift for my wife We stuffed the two of us in the front seat. I asked if he could take us to Winnisquam. Open cockpit so no flight pics. 😀 Felt like Snoopy and the Red Baron. Cool NH experience.
