This week, we were proud to join electric cooperatives from across the nation in Washington, D.C., to advocate for issues that impact our members. Thank you to Congressman Edwards, Congresswoman Foxx, Senator Budd, and Senator Tillis, and their staff, for meeting with us to discuss key issues impacting energy and the communities we serve. #Coopsonthehill
Season after season. Storm after storm. Our lineworkers show up, no matter the forecast.
Today, we say thank you to the folks who power our lives all year long in the High Country and foothills.

A little bit of rain didn't stop the fun and learning opportunities 🌧️. We were proud to participate in the second Girl Power event @cccti! This event was held for local high school students and displayed the amazing careers available to women in the electric industry.
It is with great sadness that Blue Ridge Energy announces the passing of the electric cooperative’s President of the Board of Directors, Jeff Joines.
Joines joined the Board of Directors in 1998, and leaves behind a distinguished legacy that is highlighted by his commitment to service for the cooperative, its members, and the employees. Blue Ridge Energy invites community and cooperative members to join the cooperative in sending condolences and prayers to his wife, Rita Joines, and his family. Jeff will be missed at Blue Ridge Energy, but his legacy has shaped the successes of the cooperative since 1998, and will continue to do so for many years to come.

Crews responded to outages throughout the night in brutal weather. During most storms, downed trees are a common sight but rarely are the conditions ripe for this: galloping transmission lines. A little bit of weight from winter weather combined with strong winds caused the phenomenon, which can lead to outages on its own as lines slap together.
Crews are working to restore power to app. 5,000 Ashe County members affected by high winds tonight. Crews are working as quickly and safely as possible.
Extreme cold and extreme demand on the grid! Help Beat The Peak and hold down power costs for all members by delaying large appliance usage and bumping down the thermostat between the hours of 6-10 a.m. tomorrow.
First, we would like to express that our thoughts and prayers are with sister-cooperatives and utilities to our west who experienced a devastating storm. Colder temperatures locally prevented heavy icing and led to minimal impacts.
We remain on high-alert as today's strong winds push through:

Your home works the same way on a larger scale. When it gets below 32 degrees, your heat pump relies on strip heat (like a toaster) to warm the air since it is unable to extract enough heat from the outside air. Your thermostat may show AUX or Emergency Heat when it's operating and will use a lot more energy.
What can we do to help you?
1. Budget billing: let’s look at your average usage over 12 months, set the amount so you’re never caught off guard, and enjoy the same bill for 11 months with a true-up on the 12th.
2. Identify potential problems: Blue Ridge has an Energy Solutions team that can help you better understand and manage your home’s energy use with our UsageTracker tool. Adding insulation, sealing drafts around windows and doors and replacing inefficient older appliances are all great ways to reduce your bill.
3. Compiled tips for year-round savings: blueridgeenergy.com/101
