Cyclone Arnab could turn very severe before hitting Andhra Pradesh on October 28. But the threat may not end at landfall. Its remnants could move towards northern India and Nepal, potentially interacting with a western disturbance and triggering intense rainfall, writes @bluewrit Read more: downtoearth.org.in/climate-c… #CycloneArnab #AndhraPradesh #ExtremeWeather

A historic first, but a fraction of what's needed. The Loss and Damage Fund has set aside $21.6 million for flood-hit Nepal — less than 0.5% of its estimated $4.77 billion recovery bill. Climate campaigners say the fund must respond faster and deliver far more. @bluewrit writes downtoearth.org.in/climate-c… #NepalFloods #LossAndDamage #ClimateFinance

Will crucial climate science arrive too late to inform global action? For the sixth time, countries have failed to agree on when the IPCC's next major reports should be published. Vulnerable nations warn that delays could leave the 2028 Global Stocktake without key scientific assessments, while India and others argue for more time to ensure scientific rigour. Toxic haze has covered the region, triggering protests across Indonesia, school closures in Malaysia and Timor-Leste, and prolonged unhealthy air quality in Singapore. Carbon monoxide levels are also elevated over the region, reaching the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. #IndonesiaWildfires #ElNino #AirPollution #SoutheastAsia

Indonesia's wildfires have surpassed 2019 hotspot levels, with smoke spreading to Malaysia and Singapore. Dry conditions linked to the ongoing Super El Niño could make the fires even harder to control, with smoke spreading towards the Indian Ocean. Exclusive: “The instant I saw the picture my mouth fell open and my pulse began to race.” So wrote James Watson in The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA, his controversial account of how he and Francis Crick deciphered the structure of DNA in 1953. The image, now known as photograph 51, showed an elegant, symmetrical pattern of spots formed by x-rays diffracted from strands of DNA—the fingerprint of the molecule's helical structure. Rosalind Franklin, an x-ray crystallographer, had produced the image in the spring of 1952. But Watson's 1968 book, amid other slights and sexist language directed at Franklin, implied the flash of insight was his alone. Popular accounts still routinely suggest Franklin missed the significance of the photo. She never had a chance to challenge Watson's dismissive narrative; she died of cancer in 1958, a decade before his memoir was released and became a bestseller. But a new analysis of her notes on another x-ray image, which she made just days earlier using the same DNA sample, offers a firm rebuttal. Learn more: scim.ag/4hNj7KB @NewsfromScience

Can't serve notices. Can't hold virtual hearings. Can't give a voter a copy of the order deleting them. And: "Once the appeal is disposed of... it cannot be restored on the portal if the restoration is needed on account of direction of the judicial order or otherwise." That's not a complaint from an election official on the ground. It's the minutes of a meeting of retired High Court judges, appointed on the Supreme Court's orders to hear 38 lakh SIR appeals in West Bengal, on the portal the Election Commission's IT division (headed by Seema Khanna) built for them. Minutes dated August 11, sent to the EC and the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court. Cracker of a story by @DaminiNath & @mitra_atri indianexpress.com/article/in… via @IndianExpress

Yesterday, @IndianExpress reported an unprecedented rupture inside the Election Commission: TWO of its three members objecting on record, 14 times in 10 months, to decisions taken without their knowledge. Today, the second part of our investigation looks at the concern Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi flagged most often: Who really controls our electoral rolls? We followed that question to Goa, where we found something deeply concerning. Stay with me.... (1/14) 🧵

Abode of the Clouds no more? 📌The 2026 southwest monsoon season is nearing its end but Meghalaya, one of the rainiest states in India and one of the rainiest places on Earth, experienced the highest deficit in rainfall in the country throughout the season. 📌This is an indication of drought like conditions in the state with possible impacts on agricultural productivity and water security. 🖊️ @bluewrit downtoearth.org.in/climate-c… Below: A district map of Meghalaya

India is rapidly moving towards electric mobility. But how is this transition playing out on the ground? As part of our ‘India on E-Wheels’ campaign, CSE and Down To Earth would be bringing you a series of live chats exploring India’s journey towards electric mobility and clean transport. We began the campaign by asking an important question: Is it time for India to adopt nationwide zero-tailpipe emission targets? The answer is yes. Now, as the campaign draws to a close, we turn to what is happening on the ground. Through this series of live chats, we will explore the adoption of electric mobility, emerging trends and progress, charging gaps and infrastructure constraints, and what India needs to do next. Join Down To Earth’s @bluewrit and @himanshujourno along with anchor @sukanyanair3007, as they share on-ground coverage from Karnataka and Maharashtra. 🗓️ Thursday, September 17 | 3 PM IST Press the bell icon to be notified: youtube.com/live/9G3W7nLw0Hc
