‼️ GRAND JURY DECLINES TO INDICT GRANDMOTHER IN HOT CAR DEATH OF 10-MONTH-OLD SCOTTIE CROWELL MADISONVILLE, Kentucky — More than two months after 10-month-old Scottie Crowell tragically died after being left inside a hot vehicle for approximately eight hours, a Kentucky grand jury has decided her grandmother, Dr. Stacey Fazenbaker, will not face criminal charges. On Tuesday, October 27, a Hopkins County grand jury declined to indict Fazenbaker in connection with her granddaughter’s August 13 death. According to Commonwealth’s Attorney Hannah Kington-Jarvis, the grand jury returned a “no true bill,” meaning jurors determined there was insufficient probable cause to issue an indictment. Prosecutors confirmed that Scottie’s parents were consulted throughout the investigation and grand jury process. Kington-Jarvis acknowledged the devastating loss suffered by the family, stating: “I would ask that you keep the infant’s parents and family in your thoughts and prayers as they continue to grieve and process this unimaginable loss.” The decision comes after an extensive investigation into a tragedy that has left a Kentucky family grieving the unimaginable loss of their baby girl. According to the Madisonville Police Department, Scottie’s grandmother, Dr. Stacey Fazenbaker, picked the baby up from her daughter on the morning of Thursday, August 13, 2026. She was supposed to take Scottie to daycare before heading to Owensboro Health Multicare in Madisonville, where she worked as a physician. Instead, investigators say Fazenbaker forgot her granddaughter was still in the vehicle and drove directly to work, arriving at approximately 8 a.m. Scottie remained inside the vehicle for approximately EIGHT HOURS. The heartbreaking mistake was not discovered until around 4 p.m., when Scottie’s father, Micah Crowell, arrived at daycare to pick up his daughter, only to discover she had never been dropped off that morning. He immediately contacted his wife, Dr. Sydni Crowell, who then called her mother. Fazenbaker reportedly rushed outside with several coworkers to retrieve Scottie from the vehicle, but it was already too late. 😢 “She ran outside with some co-workers to get the child,” Madisonville Police Maj. Jason McKnight told WEHT. “But it was far too late by then.” Police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel responded to the parking lot and attempted lifesaving measures, but Scottie could not be saved. An autopsy was performed on Scottie, and investigators continued gathering evidence before presenting the case to the grand jury. McKnight previously acknowledged the strong emotions surrounding Scottie’s death but emphasized that investigators were taking the case seriously. “We understand the emotions the community is feeling in this case,” McKnight said. “We are not sitting idle waiting to present this to the grand jury.” Ultimately, after reviewing the evidence, the grand jury determined there was insufficient probable cause to indict Fazenbaker. Fazenbaker had reportedly moved to the Madisonville area approximately a year earlier to be closer to her daughter, Sydni, and her growing family. Several of her current and former patients came to her defense online, describing her as a compassionate physician who would have to live with the consequences of that day for the rest of her life. What makes Scottie’s loss even more devastating, in my personal opinion, is knowing just how deeply wanted she was. Scottie and her 3-year-old brother, Cash, were both conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF). Their parents, Sydni and Micah, went through that journey because they wanted their children so badly.
