Per a note to Boston Globe staff today, the lesbian bar story generated 1,000 subscriptions to the paper yesterday. The Globe’s managing editor said it was “by far our best performing story of the year,” and appears to be “on pace to shatter all sorts of Globe records.”

The president said it plainly in the Oval Office, describing his own planned action as a “ban on the free press.”
The Constitution protects the freedom of the press from government interference. That protection does not depend on whether the president likes a news organization’s coverage, agrees with its reporting, or approves of the questions its journalists ask.
This is about more than the rights of journalists. It is about the right of the American people to receive a full and independent account of the activities, policies and decisions of whoever occupies the nation’s highest office.

People who misgender trans people often say they refuse to reinforce the “lie” that trans people exist. But even if that’s the case here, he could’ve just used gender-neutral language instead of calling her a man?

Something interesting I found in reporting this story with @bymellbarclay: Republican-led efforts against the ballot measure to repeal Virginia's gay marriage ban hinge on disinformation campaigns linking it to completely separate issues, such as abortion and transgender rights.
Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage hasn’t been enforceable since 2014, but has remained part of its constitution since voters adopted it in 2006 — at least, marriage equality advocates hope, until November.

In only a few days, Elon Musk’s super PAC has released dozens of ads vilifying trans people & accusing Democratic Senate candidates of backing a “radical trans agenda.”
In at least 2 ads, the people portrayed as trans women don’t even appear to be real.

Google briefly took down the ads after @jazzmyth and I asked whether they violated its mandatory disclosure policy for AI-generated imagery in political ads. They have since been reinstated.
