Nobody didn't know that bad people would use AI for malicious purposes. Nobody doubted that.

yes. it was always going to be this way. we tried to warn the world.

I can definitely understand how some non-technical people think their AI/LLM chatbot is conscious. I just spent some time working out an architecture for a new web app with ChatGPT. Even though I know with 100% certainty that ChatGPT is not conscious in any way, and has absolutely no feelings, I still didn't have the heart to tell it that I was going to give its design to Claude this time to implement. So when we were done, I still asked it to generate a prompt for "Codex" - But I gave the prompt to Claude.

My favorite thing about Elon's "flying Tesla" demo has been how it brought out a bunch of normies that think they're unique (or even in a minority) in figuring out that the car from that night is merely a concept car and not exactly practical as a production vehicle for purchase in a few months - And then feeling the need to post the big revelation for everyone as a favor to the world. I'm looking forward to all the posts when they figure out the little-known secret that water is wet. Lol
Normies don't seem to understand that Elon's "flying" car runs out of compressed nitrogen in about 5 seconds and takes 6 hours to recharge. They also don't know that everyone at the physical demo was given ear protection even though they were 100+ meters away. Elon has not in fact made a flying car, it is just one in a long succession of failures on this theme. Oh, and you can't actually buy the flying roadster. It is literally not for sale.

Hey @grok , Based on my tweets (and dig deep), please create an image of what the world would look like if everyone came together and did the right thing - and that is, anoint me King. Proceed when ready.

One of my hot takes is whatever definition philosophers land on for the nature of consciousness, forming automated responses, token by token, predictively based on an aggregate weighted average of prior written language - with zero actual awareness of meaning - ain't it
One of my hot takes is that the nature of consciousness is a deep and difficult problem that has puzzled philosophers for centuries and is relatively unlikely to be resolved via Twitter debates.

I'm a software engineer of 30+ years, and there aren't many more bullish about the emerging capabilities of AI - most people likely think I'm being dramatic when I talk about what I think AI can and will soon be able to do. That said, even I'm not falling for this "AI capability is growing so fast it might end humanity soon" BS. Without the proper guardrails (as Gummi gets at below), it absolutely has the ability to do some bad things and cause some damage, but there is a 0% chance it's ending humanity in any foreseeable future. Don't let them herd you like a sheep into supporting their idea of regulatory capture by scaring you with the purely made up idea that AI is legitimately some existential threat. That's ridiculous.
If buggy AI and sloppy engineers are creating computer viruses that are spreading into the internet then these companies should get sued Stop pretending this is a sign of intelligence when it's a sign of bad coding and irresponsible employees who have stopped thinking and delegated critical thinking to a technology that is not intelligent How about AI companies just fix the problem of AIs hallucinating before they bother us with this story of an apocalyptic cascading superintelligence that will kill us all I took this stuff very seriously a week ago when it started but now it's just become a joke

Dario has written that we need to “pace the frontier,” and Sam has agreed. People may be surprised by my response: go ahead. You guys are the frontier. By any reasonable metric — market share, revenue growth, model capability — the two of you have a duopoly on frontier intelligence. You’ve also claimed the lead is widening because of recursive self-improvement. I don’t see what you see in the lab. If the unreleased models are scary enough that you think you should slow down, I support your decision to be responsible. But stop pretending you need anyone else’s permission. Stop pretending antitrust law has to be suspended so you can form a cartel. Stop pretending you need a regulatory approval process that supersedes product liability. Stop pretending METR is independent when it is intertwined with Anthropic’s investors and staff. Stop pretending you need those same evaluators to police competitors who aren’t even at the frontier. Most of all, stop pretending the motivation to slow down is purely altruistic. You face massive product-liability exposure if your products enable a truly damaging cyberattack. The market already punishes models that behave in unpredictable or unauthorized ways. After the Hugging Face episode, it is simply good business for OpenAI and Anthropic to trade some raw power for reliability and predictability. Call it alignment if you want. It is also just giving customers what they want. Pacing the frontier would also create breathing room for a more intelligent conversation about regulation than Bernie Sanders’ “shut it all down.” China is very unlikely to join a global agreement, as you know, and that has to be taken into account as well. So go ahead and pace the frontier. You are the ones setting it. The easiest way not to build superintelligence is for you to agree not to build it. Demanding your preferred regulatory framework as the price of that will look like blackmail of the public and the political system. So just do it. If you do, you’ll buy goodwill for the next conversation. If you don’t, we’ll know this was just another bid for regulatory capture — or an election-season psyop.

It's amazing how much the pro-Flock surveillance discourse is just them pretending not to understand things, thus making discourse impossible.

I needed someone to give me the Heimlich maneuver yesterday on hole 13 of day two of our Sr Club Championship as the "Hey, I might actually have a chance to win this thing" thoughts started to creep in. My game was on cruise control, then straight up choke job as soon as I had that thought. This was my first time being in contention to win an individual event since I was 18yo, so hopefully I can mentally build on this. On the bright side, after my tee shot on 18, I pulled up the live scoring to see if there was any value in going after the very tucked pin, saw that I still had a chance if I could make birdie, and proceeded to strike what was probably my best shot of the day - Hit it to 5' (from 100 yards out), but unfortunately above the hole where all I could do is tap it and hope for the best, and it just lipped out. Maybe I should have had the live scoring open the whole time so my brain didn't get muddied/distracted with "maybe I have a chance" thoughts? @drakesmith__ - Outside of experiencing it and building mental callus, any thoughts on how not to choke coming down the stretch?

Three thoughts came to mind when I saw the post below. 1. Those who will give up freedom in the name of safety deserve neither. 2. The welfare of humanity is always the alibi of tyrants. 3. Has anyone ever seen @Flock_Safety and the Devil in the same room?
"We implemented license plate readers as part of a larger strategy to reduce gun violence in the city and it helped." That's from a Wisconsin law enforcement leader. And it's one of dozens of outcomes playing out across the state, from missing children located to hit-and-runs solved. Technology doesn't do the work. It helps the people doing the work do it better. This is absolutely insane. I've also seen news reports of people being arrested for social media posts, and the police arresting a kid after he was stabbed (and later died). What is happening in the UK!?
JUST IN: UK Government clarifies adults will still be able to use social media by verifying their identities with digital IDs, facial recognition, passports and credit cards.

It was a friendly argument, but I basically got in an argument with the kid working carts at the golf course the other day when I returned my cart. Me: {holding the trash I pulled from the cart} "Where can I put this stuff?" Worker: "Eh don't worry about it. I'll get it." Me: "What? No. I'm not going to let you clean up my trash. I can do that." Working: "Eh, it's my job." Me: "What? It's not your job to clean up my trash!" I don't normally rent/take a cart when I golf. Do people typically just leave their trash in the cart for someone else to clean out? If so, that seems absolutely bonkers to me.
Why do Japan fans clean up after games? “That’s the culture. It’s respect for everything: the players, supporters, and the stadium. We’re honored to be here, so we don’t want to make a mess and leave it.” I love Japan 🇯🇵

On to the final four of my club's annual match play tournament. This is net, and I always have to give strokes (gave 8 or 9 yesterday) - Thus this is the longest I've ever lasted in the winner's bracket. I was in a fairway bunker on #2 yesterday, with 189 to the pin. Hit a picture-perfect, towering, baby-draw 6-iron that one-hop-and-stopped at 4' from the pin. I think that demoralized my competitor (who apparently is usually good in these net competitions), as he never really got his game going after that. Anyway, putting is still on fire and this is the easiest golf has ever seemed to me.

Everyone on the planet needs to watch this. 👇 Social media has enabled the extremely strong programming of people to ideology; and at full population scale - And it's destroying us. Self recognition of this programming, and ability to deprogram, is our only hope.

Codex just told me it would "be comfortable implementing" my suggested approach to a problem. I'm not sure who Codex thinks he/she is, but I've been writing code for 35 years - and it's like, literally one year old!

A couple things I learned (RE speed control) from @rossmacleodputt and practicing them on my @RightEdgeGolf Putt Tracker has completely changed my (golf) life. The (by far) best competitive golf season of my life continued this past weekend. Tee-to-green ball striking started getting a bit shaky towards the end but my new putting skills - that I've NEVER had before - kept us competitive. I've always enjoyed the game of golf, but it's never been this fun before.
