Searchlight South Africa, Vol 2, No 2, January 1991: "The Kabwe conference of the ANC in 1985 pleased only the security department of the ANC together with its corrupt leaders. The conference had no grain of democracy. Throughout the proceedings, chaired by various leaders of the SACP such as Dan Tloome, John Nkadimeng and Jack Simons, the most crucial problems facing the ANC were evaded and some not even mentioned. The division in Umkhonto we Sizwe that was so apparent at the time was not even discussed. The report of the carnivorous security department was not read to the conference. The report of the Stuart Commission [which had investigated the 1984 mutiny in Umkhonto; see Bandile Ketelo et al, 'A Miscarriage of Democracy' Searchlight South Africa No 5, pp 48-9—eds] was also not tabled. Chris Hani [then the army commissar] arrogantly said the Stuart Commission was appointed by the National Executive Committee not the conference, implying that the NEC was above the conference, in violation of one of the basic principles of the ANC. In the ANC the conference is above all. It is important to note that the behaviour of Chris Hani was condoned by the President O.R. Tambo and Joe Slovo [now general secretary of the SACP], who said nothing to reprimand this despot, their subordinate, who was so rude and uncontrollable in the ANC. When a few elected delegates tried to raise these questions they were shouted down by Hani, who categorically stated that the NEC would guide the conference, thus violating the rights of delegates. That is the behaviour of a Politburo member of the Communist Party, typical of Stalinist behaviour rooted in the ANC. It is unfortunate that the ANC has been under such men, lawyers who courageously fought against Apartheid brutality but on the contrary practised this brutality against their political opponents. Fear and intimidation reigned in the conference. The ANC Security (Mbokodo) was and is still above the law. It has killed, tortured and maimed innocent cadres for smoking dagga [marijuana] and drinking liquor from Angolan villages, claiming that they were doing the work of the enemy. It is important to remember that the Apartheid regime never killed anyone for smoking dagga, but the ANC did, all under the cover of securing the Revolution. In doing this it had the protection of tried and tested O.R. Tambo. No security officer was ever put on trial or questioned for killing. People were killed under the umbrella of securing the ANC. To question or ask for clarification on the behaviour of security could lead one to Quatro [officially, Camp 32]. Talking about the need for holding a conference was only in whispers."

English: AfriForum and Limamlimi Farmers’ Association (LiFA) join forces to secure land tenure artikels.afriforum.co.za/en/… AfriForum and the Limamlimi Farmers’ Association (LiFA) of the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality area have agreed to work together to secure land tenure for commercial, emerging and small-scale farmers in the area. This follows a meeting between the civil rights organisation and the farmers’ association, during which farmers outlined the land tenure challenges they face. Illegal mining activities, farm hijackings and, in particular, the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs’ failure to award long-term lease agreements are among the most significant challenges facing farmers. The establishment of Communal Property Associations (CPAs) and the opaque and questionable allocation of land to these CPAs, land that has been used and occupied by farmers, is threatening the viability of farming operations and has already led to violence. “As farmers, we continue to face serious challenges relating to land tenure. The Department’s failure to conclude proper long-term lease agreements with us, or, where appropriate, provide title deeds, makes it extremely difficult for us to secure financing and properly invest in our farming operations. This is particularly concerning because some of our previous lease agreements included an option to purchase the land. Many of our farmers and their families have lived on these farms and cultivated the land for decades, making it difficult to understand why the Department continues to deny the majority of farmers secure, long-term tenure. We are also concerned by the impression that lease agreements, agricultural inputs and access to financial support, including grants, development funding and agricultural loan opportunities, are sometimes being used by Department officials as a form of ‘reward’, rather than being administered through a fair, transparent and lawful process. This creates a serious risk of favouritism, abuse of power and possible corruption in the allocation of land tenure and agricultural support. As LiFA, we are taking responsibility for addressing these land tenure challenges and are encouraged to work with AfriForum in pursuing a fair and sustainable resolution,” says Kurhula Maluleka, Deputy Secretary-General of LiFA. “It is clear that the Department is not serious about securing land tenure for farmers, despite the statements made by the ANC-led government in this regard. The Department claims that contracts cannot be concluded with these farmers, yet contracts have in fact been concluded with a few of them. It is evident that this is not being handled in accordance with the principles of just administrative action. Sustainable, profitable agricultural production and long-term wealth creation depend on land tenure security. It is a privilege for AfriForum to work alongside Limamlimi to help secure this certainty for farmers,” says Barend Uys, Head of Intercultural relations and cooperation at AfriForum. A database of all the challenges facing farmers in the area is being compiled, following which further steps will be taken by AfriForum and LiFA.

English: Joint indigenous veld goat project enters next phase of commercialisation artikels.afriforum.co.za/en/… The indigenous veld goat incubation project, launched by @AfriForum, Saai and Kgosi Gabo Moroka of the Barolong Boo Seleka of Thaba’Nchu, in May 2024, entered a new phase on its journey towards commercialisation in the first week of September 2026. The farming enterprise on the farm Blijdskap, trading as K.G.M. Farming, took part for the first time last week in the Vleissentraal auction in Kimberley, as well as the Indigenous Veld Goat Breeders’ Society’s annual national auction in Bloemfontein. In total 33 rams and six ewes were sold in Kimberley and Bloemfontein respectively, while a stud ram was also purchased at the national auction, with the aim of establishing a fully-fledged indigenous veld goat stud. In the coming week, ahead of the cultural community’s annual general meeting on Saturday, 12 September, Kgosi Gabo Moroka will also donate ten rams from the incubation project to settlements within the community, with a view of improving goat genetics in the area. Agricultural development is one of the key pillars of the Barolong Boo Seleka’s economic development plan, and the incubation project, together with the distribution of rams with improved genetics, forms part of this plan. AfriForum and Saai are involved in agricultural development in the area through their agricultural development incubator, the Resilient Regenerative Agricultural Initiative (RRAIN). “I am deeply grateful for the progress we are making in commercialising this farming enterprise. It is a privilege to be able to honour, this week, the promise I made to the community regarding the improvement of genetics through this project. The only way our people will achieve the beautiful future we dream of is by strengthening our self-sufficiency and building that future ourselves. Agricultural projects such as this one, undertaken in partnership with other stakeholders, are among the practical steps we are taking to make this happen. We are grateful to our Heavenly Father for the blessings from His hand,” says Kgosi Moroka. “Our participation in the national auction was extremely valuable for us as a project team. It gave us the opportunity to network with the country’s leading breeders, and we were also able to gain valuable input to help take this project to the next level. It was a real learning experience for us, but we are very excited about the livestock improvement potential of the stud ram we purchased,” says Nantes Kelder, National Project Coordinator of Intercultural relations and cooperation at AfriForum. “Agriculture offers rural communities a unique opportunity to create prosperity through commercialisation. Saai is grateful, through our involvement in this project, to be able to make a positive difference,” says Leon Lourens, Development Coordinator at Saai. “I really enjoy managing this goat farming enterprise, even though it can be challenging at times. My focus is on running the farm and growing it to the point where it becomes profitable. I’m proud of what the farm has achieved so far, but I know there is still a great deal of work ahead of us. The future of this country lies in the hands of young people. I hope that, through this farming enterprise, I can also inspire other young people from traditional communities to make a difference through agriculture and to build a future for themselves in this way,” says Motlotlegi Motshabi, manager of Kgosi Moroka Farming.

English: AfriForum and Umbumbano Lwezinduna demand urgent action following the murder of induna and his wife artikels.afriforum.co.za/en/… AfriForum and the traditional leadership interest organisation Umbumbano Lwezinduna are calling on the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government to urgently take decisive action and treat the safety of traditional leaders, and izinduna (headmen) in particular, with the seriousness it demands. This follows the murder of induna (headman) Mxolisi Patrick Mwelase and his wife, Thandekile Joyce Mwelase, of the Inadi Traditional Community in the Umgungundlovu District. Induna Mwelase was shot in his shop on 30 July 2026 and succumbed to his wounds on 16 August, while his wife was shot dead in their home on 2 August. Nothing was taken from induna Mwelase’s shop. “More than 60 izinduna (headmen) and six amakhosi (senior traditional leaders) have been murdered in KwaZulu-Natal since 2019. This cannot go on — traditional leaders are living in fear, and the situation has become unbearable. Not a single provincial government official or political party has said a word about the murder of induna Mwelase and his wife, and no word of comfort or offer of assistance has reached the grieving family. It is striking how quickly officials and politicians speak out in public and demand urgent action when political councillors are murdered, yet say nothing when traditional leaders are killed. Cases have been opened with the SAPS, but the family has received no feedback whatsoever,” says ndunankulu Phakamani Dlamini, treasurer-general and acting secretary of Umbumbano Lwezinduna. “AfriForum is deeply concerned about the impact that the murder of traditional leaders, as well as unlawful interference in traditional leadership, is having on stability in rural areas. AfriForum has already sent several letters to the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Thami Ntuli, regarding unlawful action taken against traditional leaders, including an incident in which a firearm was pointed at an induna. The lack of any response or action makes it clear that the Premier and his provincial government do not regard the safety of traditional leaders and the stability of traditional communities as a priority,” says Barend Uys, Head of Intercultural relations and cooperation at AfriForum. Following discussions, AfriForum and Umbumbano Lwezinduna have agreed to collaborate to strengthen stability and safety in rural areas and to protect traditional leadership as a cultural institution. “Things have become extremely difficult for the communities we serve. Unlawful interference in traditional leadership, and the resulting tension over leadership positions, is costing lives. There are also ongoing issues around mining activities and land use for business purposes. Izinduna who act in the interests of their communities are being targeted. People are becoming increasingly reluctant to serve as izinduna, because they are convinced it has simply become too dangerous,” says Dlamini. “The Western Cape parliament recently resolved to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate violent crime in the province. If the political will to protect traditional leaders truly exists, the KwaZulu-Natal legislature will urgently establish an ad hoc committee to investigate the murder of traditional leaders and interference in traditional leadership. The government’s response will show us whether the lives of these leaders actually matter to them,” concludes Uys. The case number for the murder of induna Mxolisi Mwelase is CAS 988/07/2026, and that of his wife, Thandekile Mwelase, is CAS 26/08/2026.

A joint layer-hen project was launched today in Disaneng, the capital of the Batlharo Boo Tokwana Ba Ga Masibi cultural community west of Mahikeng in the North West province. In addition to providing a starter package that includes Boschveld chicks, a chicken coop with accessories, vegetable seeds for a year as well as ten fruit trees, training in poultry farming was provided to community members. This agricultural development project is being implemented by the Batlharo Boo Tokwana Ba Ga Masibi Traditional Council in partnership with @afriforum through Resilient Regenerative Agricultural Initiative (RRAIN), an agricultural development incubator and joint initiative by AfriForum and Saai. The project is yet another outcome of the mutual recognition and collaboration agreement concluded between AfriForum and the community during 2023. “This project has the potential to generate sustainable income within our community and also creates the opportunity for community members to acquire knowledge of poultry farming which will be to their benefit in the long run. It is a privilege for us to work with AfriForum on a project that will have a positive impact on our community,” says Kgosi Mogakolodi Masibi, Kgosi of the Batlharo Boo Tokwana Ba Ga Masibi and Chairperson of the Batlharo Boo Tokwana Ba Ga Masibi Traditional Council. “It is a privilege and a pleasure for AfriForum to collaborate with the Batlharo Boo Tokwana Ba Ga Masibi community on this agricultural development project. It is one small step in the long process of improving the self-sufficiency and prosperity of this community. This project, however humble, serves as another example of the positive impact resulting from the collaboration between different cultural communities. A network of mutually supportive cultural communities, founded on the principles of mutual recognition and respect, is slowly but steadily creating an enabling environment that assists communities to help themselves to thrive,” said Barend Uys, Head of Intercultural relations and cooperation at AfriForum. “We hope that this project will also inspire other stakeholders from the private and public sectors to become involved in community development initiative such as this one,” closes Kgosi Masibi. AfriForum and the Batlharo Boo Tokwana Ba Ga Masibi jointly erected Setswana sign boards welcoming community members and travellers to the area of the community in September 2024.
